The most undoubtedly hated race in Alagaësia are the Ugralgra, or the Urgals, as they are referred to by other species. Once a proud, intelligent race known as the Kull, they co-habited their homeland of Alalea with the elves. However, their use of blood magic caused the Kull to devolve into savages, driven mad from hatred and pain. They followed their enemies the elves across the ocean to Alagaësia, where they infested most uninhabited areas, chiefly the Hadarac Desert. Their numbers are many and they breed rapidly, making them a constant blight that only the Riders battle.
Some Urgals, however, still have the Old Blood running through their veins. Averaging eight or nine feet in height with onyx or silver skin, they are the elite forces of the Urgals, and the closest things alive to Kull- and that is what they are called, the Kull. Usually the only Urgals willing to speak to other races, and counted among the smartest and best-looking among their own kind, they are usually tribe war chiefs and nobles.
However, perceived as demons and barbarians, all Urgals are unattractive with grey or brown skin, feral yellow eyes and ox-like features, notably their long, curving horns. Never shorter than six feet, with a guttural language and unmatched prowess in combat, few are unshaken by their appearance. Tribal and pagan, with a polytheistic religion similar to the dwarves’, most clans are matriarchal, as dams, the females, are bigger than rams, the males. The most powerful dams, the Herndal, often have harems, and may confiscate the mate of a low-ranking dam at their personal whim. An Urgal’s ranking depends on their combat skill and how many opponents they have defeated.
Though Urgals populate the entirety of Alagaësia, sightings are reported most often in the Silent Plains and the Hadarac Desert. The Urgals of the Hadarac are brown-skinned, allowing easy camouflage amidst the dunes, and while not the tallest, they are the strongest and the most vicious, with enormous muscles and superior tactics. Numbering in the thousands or perhaps more, they lead a constant war against the Dragon Riders that goes unnoticed by Broddring and most of the elves. The Urgals of the Silent Plains are oddly shy, and tall and thin with dull grey-blue skin. Their villages are exceptionally well hidden, and they rarely bother humans unless they bother them first.
THE URGAL LANGUAGE
Ahgrat ukmar - it is done
Drajl - spawn of maggots; a popular curse among Urgals and non-Urgals
Herndal - a high-ranking Urgal dam
Ithrö - doom
Kaz jtierl trazhid - Do not attack
Nar - a gender-neutral title of respect
Otrag bagh - Circle him
Ushnark - father
Ugralgra - Urgals; literally, ‘those with horns’
Zhâda - rebel
