Physical Description:
I’m often told by visitors to the Citadel that I’m small, cute, and all around adorable. I guess it’s because I still look like a little kid, even though I’m twelve. I’m four feet six inches tall and am very slender. Being one of the Citadel’s kitchen slaves, I’m usually inside and not doing tiring work. So my skin is really pale, but not so pale I look sick. I don’t have those growing muscles like most boys my age. I’m fast and nimble, but that’s about it. And I guess I haven’t really lost my baby fat, so my face is still roundish and child-like. I have my momma’s long, thin fingers. Count Genji’s dad, Count Fenix, tried to have me learn how to play a lyre but I could never figure it out. So he sent me back to the kitchens. He never did learn that I can sing, though. Count Genji did, though. He says I have a soothing voice, like the winds blowing chimes or something silly like that. But he likes it, so sometimes I sing for him or at feasts. My hair’s kind of long for a boy’s, but most of the boys and men that work in the Citadel have longer hair. Mine’s a dark brown, like my momma’s, and comes down to my chin in the front. It’s shorter in the back, but the bangs are the longest part. That was how Momma always cut it, so that’s how I cut it. The bangs curl down on the sides to frame my eyes, while the ones in the middle finish off the individual frames and stop just above my nose. They really tickle sometimes and I don’t like the style, but the old Count liked it and Count Genji seems to also. I’m told my eyes are too pretty for a boy. Momma said they’re the rich, light brown color of hazelnuts, just like my dad’s. And I guess they look either very serious or very playful depending on whether I’m smiling or not. But I smile a lot, so I guess they usually look playful. My clothes are clean and simple. I usually wear a plain white shirt with brown trousers. They’re both made of cotton. For special events, like feasts and festivals, I wear the livery of the Lantieri family. It’s a lot like what I usually wear, except the material is of a higher quality and the Lantieri crest is stitched on the left breast. And it’s usually a different color, depending on the season. The crest is always stitched in gold, but sometimes the shirt and pants are dark blue or light green - like a winter sky or fresh spring grass. When I’m not working, I’m usually wearing an odd fur hat with strange leather-strap glasses on it. Momma said it belonged to my dad, so I take really good care of it.
Personality:
I can’t play a musical instrument, but people say I’m a born storyteller and a good singer. I like to make up stories for the cooks when I’m not running around getting them things. I don’t know where the ideas come from. Cooks say I have an...active imagination. I don’t know what that big word means, but I guess they’re talking about my mind. Sometimes I make up songs to make them work harder, but they don’t always like that. I like making friends. Whenever I come across new servants or slaves in the Citadel, I talk to ‘em. Sometimes they’ll be really mean to me and tell me to not talk to ‘em no more, but if they seem super lonely I talk to ‘em anyways. They almost never hit me or anything. Not like the boys my age. I don’t like playing rough, but they do. Sometimes I can’t avoid playing with ‘em and it always hurts a lot afterwards. I want to play with them, but they always wanna play things like humans and elves and I always end up bein’ an elf. So I spend a lot of time in the kitchens, tellin’ stories to the cooks. ‘Course, sometimes the cooks get mad at me and tell me to get out. That’s when I kinda wander around the Citadel, thinking up more stories. Sometimes I go to the stables or Count Fenix’s old zoo gardens. There’s lots of animals there and they all know me. They’re my friends when no one else wants to be. Count Genji takes really good care of them, though he doesn’t seem to visit ‘em very often. That makes me really happy that he’s a good person to animals. But I always try to be mindful about my work. Count Genji doesn’t like when people mess up. He’s scary when he’s mad. I can’t remember if old Count Fenix was like that. He was always super nice to me, though, so maybe he wasn’t.
History:
I never met my dad, but Momma said he was a great man. He made bows for the human army when it fought in that great big war awhile ago. He was a minor noble, she said. And she was one of his slaves that helped out around his workshop and home. Momma said he loved her very much and was gonna free her, especially when he found out she was gonna have me. But I guess he died before he could do that, because I’m still a slave. After Dad died, Momma was sold to old Count Fenix. So I was born in the Citadel. But Momma was never the same after I was born. She couldn’t really do much around the Citadel, like she used to do for Dad. But she could still sing really pretty. She used to sing to me all the time when I was really little. I remember falling asleep to her singing. Count Fenix liked her singing, too. He was always summoning her to his room to sing for him. I don’t think Count Genji liked that very much, but he never said anything. I don’t think Count Genji likes much of anything here, to be honest. But he certainly didn’t seem very sad when Momma died six years ago. Some of the other servants and slaves did, but Counts Fenix and Genji both just kinda went along with their lives. Especially Count Genji because Count Fenix died two years after Momma did. As for me, I started doing more work in the kitchens after Momma died. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I run around getting ingredients for the cooks and clean the dishes. When it’s time for Count Genji and his guards - and sometimes his guests - to eat, I’m always sent out to help with the serving. I always serve Count Genji. The other slaves are too scared to, but I don’t mind it too much. He’s normally kind of distant and doesn’t say nice things often, but so long as I don’t mess up he doesn’t punish me. That’s how things are in the Citadel - you do it right or you get a beating. And it’s usually from Count Genji himself. We don’t mess up things around here very often.
