Name:
Doctor Malekai Sunahara
Age:
Thirty-two years
Race:
Human
Occupation:
Doctor
Allegiance:
Broddring
Physical Description:
Malekai is Itasan by birth and upbringing, both of which can be seen in his features and the very light accent accompanying his otherwise excellent grasp of the common tongue. He has wide, narrow eyes framed by thick, straight dark eyebrows and small eyelashes. The eyes themselves are the darkest shade of brown, and usually smiling. He has very prominent bone structure with a bold, straight nose and high cheekbones, as well as thin lips, a tall chin, and a narrow jaw. His forehead is wide and arched, and his hair is usually kept very short so as not to interfere with his work. It is naturally spiky, sticking straight up, and jet-black in hue. When in Carvala, Malekai is expected to keep his face clean-shaven, but when out on his field trips he will often grow a small beard. Overall, Malekai is considered unconventionally handsome- at least when he does something about his appearance, and the fact that he is always smiling doesn’t hurt either.
He is not a tall man, standing at 5’8”, and his skin is fairly tanned from days spent working outside. Malekai’s body is long and lean, with square shoulders. He has some muscle, but it isn’t too noticeable. Unlike the soldiers, he doesn’t have the time or the patience to do extensive workouts every day. His hands, however, are callused and his nails very short from a lifetime of manual work. Malekai is agile, relying on quick reflexes rather than strength. His wardrobe is highly varied- in his room in Castle Broddring; Malekai has an entire closet full of the finest silks that he almost never wears except to fancy occasions. He is not disinclined to giving away these clothes to the needier, especially fine furs in the winter. Usually, Malekai will prefer to dress in common clothing with muted colours. He pays little care to what he wears as long as it is clean, suitable to work in, and doesn’t draw too much attention. As for weapons, Malekai prefers small knives at close range, and isn’t too bad a shot with a bow. He strictly refuses to use any of his medical tools as weapons, although will use his saw for intimidating enemies.
Personality:
Malekai’s personality is considerably more playful and friendly than most doctors. He is genuinely amicable and cheerful, almost to the point of being incredibly annoying. He bounces around Castle Broddring quite a bit, randomly butting into rooms and conversations. He can usually be found shirking his paperwork duties and avoiding meetings simply to have a chat with friends, even while complaining gleefully about he might be executed if his paperwork piles up any further. Malekai is also forcefully hospitable- when patients are injured or old friends come to visit, he will happily drag them back to his house for a night’s stay with or without the person’s consent. His goofball antics even extend to people who are being unkind to him, and his openness and kindness is usually mistaken for weakness. Malekai is also particularly fond of women, but is always a gentleman and far from a lecher. Being a doctor, a woman’s body by itself will not inspire any desire in him.
However, in terms of his duties, Malekai is very serious when it comes to treating his patients. He was inspired to become a doctor after he had to helplessly watch his siblings die, and his specialization is in treating ghastly injuries. In this, Malekai not only has to treat the injuries, but he often has to physically protect himself against whatever individual caused those wounds in the first place. He is trustworthy and intelligent, and uses his bubbly personality as a sort of shield for the darker aspects of his position. Malekai will consciously remove himself from his main personality when working, and as such, he can work with dead bodies and gruesome situations without flinching. Even when he is required to deal out death himself, Malekai will always act sharply in high-pressure conditions. He is calm and analytical, with a great eye for detail and unusual patterns, and can cut out unimportant details to focus on what is really necessary. As such, Malekai is an excellent strategist and tactician. He is also a realist, and realizes that he cannot always be honest or take the moral high road.
Malekai, however, views his current position as castle doctor unfavourably- most days; he deals with abused slaves and has to perform autopsies on assassinated nobles. He often has to keep quiet about the real way people die, the most glaring example being Azuan Angrenost. Malekai dislikes the dishonesty of the aristocracy and being unable to help those who really need it, and so often goes travelling to find cures in the wilderness or to offer his aid to other cities. He is sociable and makes friends easily, and will happily dispense wisdom as well as medical aid. Malekai would like to get married and have a family one day, but his current unsavoury position makes that a dangerous prospect for a future wife.
History:
Malekai was born on the island of Kashidis, in the nation of Itasus. His family inhabited the desert at the center of the island, and they were so poor that they didn’t even give names to their children. Some years, there wasn’t a drop of rain, and during others, rain would fall in such quantity that everything would be washed away. As the oldest, the task fell upon Malekai to bury his siblings whenever interminable droughts occurred. At the age of twelve, however, he realized that his death would be next. He set out over the desert alone, and after two weeks managed to find a village, collapsing nearby it. He was found by hunters and brought to the apothecary, where Malekai was fed and given water until his strength returned to him. Malekai had never been healed before, and was fascinated by the apothecary’s abilities. He begged to be taken on as an apprentice, wanting to heal people as well.
The apothecary, a man named Sunahara, gave Malekai his first name and approved of the apprenticeship as long as Malekai studied physical training as well. Malekai stayed with Sunahara for five years, but the apothecary only knew herbal remedies. Malekai wanted to be able to heal the most vicious of wounds and bring the ill back from near death, so Sunahara suggested Ilirea, the center of learning in the world. Eager to learn, Malekai collected his savings, said his farewells to Sunahara, and bribed one of the crewmen of an Itasan ship to let him stow away on board. He spent the voyage in the hold of the boat and landed in Teirm. With the last of his money, Malekai took a stagecoach to Ilirea and applied to the university. He wanted to learn how to treat viruses, but the Riders had another task for him.
Malekai was accepted despite being foreign and knowing very little common tongue at the time because Alagaësia was desperate for doctors. This was during the Blue Divide, and countless thousands on the battlefield had to be treated. Malekai was immediately sent to the Plains to learn how to perform amputations and emergency procedures first-hand. He worked there for seven years, and became a highly proficient war doctor. His ministrations were noticed by a Broddring general, who offered Malekai a high-paying job at the castle once the war was over. Malekai agreed; eager to get away from the fighting. Carvala had many people, especially refugees, who needed treatment. However, Malekai was expected to be at the castle for darker purposes.
His duties were to locate assassins based on their methods of disposing of their targets. He mainly did autopsies, and then followed the clues back to the perpetrator. Malekai is not fond of assassins and thought it was a fair enough job. However, since he started working at Castle Broddring, Malekai has become entangled in many nefarious plots- one of them being Nayeli’s poisoning of Azuan. Malekai did an autopsy of the old King after he died, and, discovering poison, confronted the new Queen about it. Nayeli threatened Malekai, stating that if he ever spoke of it or tried to leave his job at the Castle, she’d kill him. Malekai has since been forced to stay in the castle, but does his best to weasel his way out of its confines whenever possible.
