Riley's Tryout

[Riley]

Riley sighed, looking down into the stairwell leading into the vault. This was it, the dream he had harbored for years was about to come true, or so he hoped anyway. He had spent several days on Vroengard now, and he had finally been granted permission to decent into the earth and be tested by the eggs. Riley stepped to the edge of the very first step, staring down into the passage and taking a deep breath. This was it, he couldn’t put it off any longer, and he didn’t want to put it off any longer anyway.

Riley started walking down the stairs, keeping his right hand on the wall as he descended. He could feel his heart beating a mile a minute, he thought he could feel it rising up his chest and to his throat. His fingers graced the wall to his right lightly as the passage continued to darken. His mind raced, his face burned, he could feel his breath, every single aspect of his body twinge in anticipation. Shuddering, Riley couldn’t help but smile and increase his pace his dream was within reach! His anticipation only increased with each and every step he took.

Finally after several more minutes of walking, and a rapid increase of anticipation, he emerged into the vault. He gazed at the five eggs sitting on the pillows for several moments before he stepped up to the alter they were on. With a deep breath, Riley reached out to the first egg and gently touched it. A thought struck him, and without even considering it he spoke in the ancient language. ”Choose wisely.” Moving to the next egg, he touched it, ”Make the world a better place.” Stepping to the middle egg, he gently lowered his hand onto it, ”Little one, you will be great.” Moving to the fourth egg he closed both eyes and touched the egg. ”You will effect many lives.” Finally Riley stepped in front of the last egg, touching it he took a deep breath, ” Young one, be the best you can.”

Riley took a few steps back and then spoke one last phrase, ”There is no book or teacher to give you the answers, to show you the way. Choose your own way.” With the last phrase spoken, he stood tall and straight, watching the eggs for even the slightest movement…

Silence began to stretch over the cavern and one would think that nothing was going to happen, but then it did...

The Purple Egg began to shake, the mere presences of it's rider's mind and the touch of his hand, set it off. As it shook among the pillow, a piece of the hard shell popped off, hitting the wall close by and then it exploded, the small purple hatchling rolling around on the pillow. Purple eyes landed upon the Male.

The cavern was filled with the voice coming from the Eldunarí, the Heart of Hearts from an unknown dragon that guarded the eggs. "Welcome to the world, child. Rider, your dragon has hatched, the child of the Dragons Lilac and Porfirio, both dragons of the Riders."

As the room fell silent again, one would know that soon someone would be down in the chambers with the new rider.

Riley blinked in surprise, watching the purple egg move and begin to crack. Was this really happening, was he really about to become a Dragon Rider? His question was quickly answered as the egg exploded, the small violet dragon turning on the pillow until she faced him. He heard the voice coming from everywhere, not sure what had caused it. Riley smiled, taking a few breaths and laughing loudly, the dragon tilting her head at him. His body shaking, he stepped up to the dragon, slowly raising his right hand and touching the small dragon.

Icy energy his hand and into his veins, burning like freezing fire, he fell back with a cry. Every pour of his body ached, this lasted only for a few minutes, but it felt like hours. Panting heavily, he looked at his palm, the diffused oval appearing on his hand, glowing brightly. Riley gaped at the gedwey ignasia, the mark of a Rider. Slowly he stood and reached his hand out to the dragon, this time only feeling a light tingle. A curious tendril of thought touched his mind it took him only a few moments to realize it was coming from the dragon. The dragon slowly started to climb up his arm until she rested on his shoulder, wrapping her tail around his neck.

A wide smile spread across Riley's face, he reached up and scratched the dragon's head lightly, getting a light hum from her. The dragon cocked her head at him, blowing a puff of smoke at her new Rider. The tendril of thought connecting the two altered slightly, wanting to know more about herself. "Little one... you need a name..." He could only guess slightly at her gender, but thought back on his lessons from Ilirea, from what he could guess, the dragon was female. "Taesi.. Are you a Taesi?" He asked softly, receiving a warm affectionate feeling from her.

Sometimes it felt like the hours were blending together. Only earlier, I had spoken to my love and he was back with me and no one cared. My sister did not complain and my brother was very happy for me. Being in Vroengard was so much different and only recently, one had come to the riders requesting a chance to become a rider. Riley Cypher had been his name, that much I had remembered, but I had little hope anyone would be picked so soon. Why did I feel this way? Everything was already going badly, why would a child be picked for another few years. My stomach churned at the thought, but the chance had been granted… Maybe I should have hope? It was possible… Right?

I brushed my hair carefully, letting the black waves fall around my shoulder as I sat on a wood stool at a small table with a mirror hanging from a poll. As I let out a sigh, a felt a sharp pain in my head and then a warmth that I knew as that of someone kind and gentle. ”He has been chosen.”

[/color] I rubbed my forehead and then looked at the mirror. Was that? No… I couldn’t have been. I stood, my sleeping dress was all that I had on, but I managed to slip on my brown slippers before running out into tent city. As I moved quickly, I felt the wind of wings and stopped, looking up to see Tasia falling to the ground beside him. ”Was that the Eldunarí?”[/color] My friend held the same surprise that I did. I nodded my head and knew if she had heard it then the leader of the rider, Anurin, had too, but we were told to go if that voice sounded in our heads.

As we ran, I finally made it to the entrance of the cavern and we began heading deep into the chambers. After alerting the two guards at the mid-way point that we believed a rider had been born, they were shocked as well. ”Stay here, we want to make sure.”[/color] Why was I so doubtful? I did not understand this. Tasia was probably speaking to Sunglow mentally and I was too worried and excited to think about speaking to them mentally. As we finally reached the last chamber, I was amazed to see what I saw.

The violet dragon was curled around the neck of man, Riley Cypher. ”Tasia… It was the Eldunarí... We have a new Rider…”[/color] My voice held one of relief and joy. This was amazing and I could see the smile on Tasia’s face. I finally managed to see that she was wearing barely anything. Her bosoms were covered in a strip of black cloth and her waist held a black skirt that was sliced up some blow her thighs. The hair that hung around her shoulders was free of her normal little tiara that she wore. I turned my eyes to Riley and clapped my hands together and smiled at him. ”Our first human rider… Oh, this is a joyous moment!”[/color]

The sound of footsteps came from behind me and I turned, seeing the leader of the riders, Anurin Sarethi. As I gave him a curtsy, Tasia gave her own greeting. The man looked at the new rider and a small smile was on the elf's face. "Well, Princess Leilani, you should be very happy... Our first human rider."[/color] I smiled and did not correct the elf for calling me Princess. I was no longer a princess, but that didn't matter right now. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Riley couldn't help but smile as the two women entered the room, not fully registering that one of them was barely clothed. "Good evening m'lady." He said softly, gently nodding his head, when she mentioned him being a Rider, and the moment being joyous, he couldn't help but reach up and scratch at Taesi's head again. Then he noticed the second woman was an elf, and as he noticed that, Anurin joined them, evening the gender ratio out a bit. Almost anyway. Without pause, he put the first two fingers of his right hand to his lips, then rolled them over his sternum, "May good fortune rule over you Anurin-Elda" He stated, beginning the traditional elven greeting.

Riley stepped forward, "Thank you Anurin-Elda, and you Lady Leilani for giving humans this chance to join the Riders. It is my greatest honor to join the ranks of the Riders." He was still in a mild state of shock, this was something he never thought would happen. And even after it did happen, he didn't think he would be the first human Rider. But here he was, the first human Rider, Ana was going to be proud of him. After a few more seconds of smiling like an idiot, he realized he hadn't introduced his dragon yet. "This little one here is Taesi, she's my new partner."

Taesi watched everything from the safety of her perch on Riley's shoulder. When her partner introduced her to the group, she let out a few puffs of smoke. The young dragon sent Riley a feeling of intense hunger, causing the newly chrisoned Rider to look at the small dragon and smile. "And I do believe she's telling me she is hungry." He started to ask if they could go, before he thought of something else, and turned and went back to the pillow, collecting all the pieces of Taesi's egg.

Storing the pieces of Taesi's egg safely inside his tunic, he turned back to the group again. "I would like to get Taesi something to eat, if any of you would like to come with me, please feel free." Riley motioned for the group to lead him out, he was focused more on the cat sized dragon on his shoulder.

My night gown hung loosely around me, but at this point, I really didn’t care. Tasia didn’t really care about her wardrobe either, we were both happy. ”Good evening m'lady." Oh sure, I wanted one of the children to become a rider, but they were not fully ready for the possibilities. As I clapped my hands together, I couldn’t help but bounce and forgot completely about the greeting that Tasia had taught me when around elves of any nature. After she did it, I was quick to do it though, not wanting to be disgraceful towards the great leader. ”May good fortune rule over you Anurin-Elda." I let out a breath as I realized he had done his own studies. This was very good, but there was a lot of things to do before they were sure he was ready to do things on his own.

”Thank you Anurin-Elda, and you Lady Leilani for giving humans this chance to join the Riders. It is my greatest honor to join the ranks of the Riders." The elven male glanced back at me and the other elf and smiled. ”You should thank the lovely lady. It was her work that managed to even have us consider such a thing… And even though we all feel it will benefit, there is a slight problem with our elven brothers and sisters blocking us from our home. We have many challenges to overcome.”

[/color] I nodded in agreement and finally stepped closer to the new rider and the elder rider. ”Yes, and you have much to learn. Our people did not learn of the ways of the riders, you will need to learn them like the elves learned many years before even considering becoming riders.”[/color] I said to the male human before me.

Looking back at Tasia, I knew she was communicating with her dragon and soon, the sound of a bellow echoed through the cavern, though it was loud, it was not as loud as what it could have been. The mighty dragon outside was not shouting right into the cavern, but into the air and I was sure the others were following her trumpet. The first human rider had been chosen and not only that, but the first young dragon in a few years from what I had heard. Normally, a rider or two every year, but these last few years saw few riders. ”This little one here is Taesi, she's my new partner." The elven woman smiled and joined my side before stepping forward and glancing at the dragon rider. For a moment, I noticed a mental conversation going on and he gave a nod for her to go over to the new rider.

Looking at the small hatchling, she took in every aspect of it. ”Claws are nice and sharp, it seems… Open your mouth, sweetie… Teeth are good and white… Scales are nicely colored and have a nice shine that will only get better with age… And her body and frame… It seems her young muscle are well proportioned or her size.”[/color] A simple nod came from Anurin and he looked back at Riley. ”Very good Tasia, you’re knowledge and thoughts are perfect… As for the young dragon, I am happy to see that she picked you, young rider. I am sure your mother and father will be pleased to meet you young one.”[/color]

Seeing the puff of smoke, I was amazed and stepped up towards the other two. ”I thought dragons could not produce heat yet?”[/color] Anurin smiled at myself for a moment and then held out his hand to the young dragon. ”A few manage to get some puffs of smoke out from an early age… If I am not mistaken, her father could do the same.”[/color] I smiled, very much happy to see that she was gaining things from her parents.

”And I do believe she's telling me she is hungry." I smiled and nodded before watching as he went to her own pillow and took her shells. That very much interested me as to why, but she would not ask. ”I would like to get Taesi something to eat, if any of you would like to come with me, please feel free." Anurin smiled and motioned for the young man to follow. ”Please come. I am sure we can find some small creatures for him to eat. A few humans that came with us raise small animals for the young dragons, and they were easy to bring to the island.”[/color] Rabbits did make for a good stew, but I knew that even the elves were not very happy about eating any creature, but for their dragons, they put up with it. Riley smiled as the Rider's complimented Taesi, the small dragon sitting still and straight as she was being examined. When she was fully complimented, she let out another puff of smoke from her nostrils. His own smile widened, glad that others shared his opinion of Taesi. However he WAS more than slightly biased on the subject matter. Riley looked at Anurin as they started walking again, not even caring about the fact that they were miles underground. "We met once before Anurin-Elda, back in Ilirea when I was a child, training with the Riders to learn magic." He then realized that he didn't know if calling the leader of the Riders "Elda" was correct or not, was there a different honorific he was supposed to use?

Riley then looked at Leilani, "You're right, I have much to learn, and I will study hard. However, I can also help some in training some of the younger ones." He began, Taesi crawling down his shoulder as Riley cupped his arms, cradling the small dragon carefully and gently. "I am well trained with a sword, fluent in the ancient language, and in telepathy. I've even got some basic and rudimentary understanding of magic... However it's paultry in comparison to any elf, and many humans. I truly look forward to beginning my training." Despite not speaking in the ancient language, he was being completely honest. He was too stunned and ecstatic to even come close to coming up with a lie.

Riley then looked at the second woman, the other elf, and realized that while Anurin and Leilani might know his name, she probably wouldn't. "My name is Riley Cypher some call me Wolfsbane. May good fortune rule over you." Taesi squawked from his arms, making a few other noises, wanting the food she had been promised. Riley smiled down at her scratching under her chin lightly with one finger, her violet eyes closing and a low soft hum reverberated from her chest. Then her head was up, and she deftly climbed up to Riley's head, examining everything as they walked past it. She soon became bored with the hallway, but stayed balanced on Riley's head, unfolding her wings and using her tail to keep balance.

Riley thought about what Anurin had said in the Vault, considering it carefully, he could feel Taesi reading his thoughts, but not fully understanding them yet. "Anurin-Elda.. Is there anything I can do to help you... I suppose I mean us now... get back into Du Weldenvarden?" All he wanted was peace between all the races of Alagaesia, especially between the humans and the elves. Riley had spent his life either being hated by the elves, or being treated with indifference, he wanted to help fix that. Help bridge the distance between all the races. Taesi made another squawking sound from Riley's head, her mind buzzing with curiosity when they finally exited the tunnel and into the outside world.

Overcome by the sheer amount of curiosity in Taesi's mind, this mental link was going to take a lot of getting used too, he started to bubble with questions. "I've got so many questions about... everything. How long until Taesi grows up? When can we start our training? What will we be doing?I'm sorry... I'm asking too many questions.. It's just..." Riley cut himself off as Taesi blew some smoke down in his face, causing him to cough lightly. This was going to be a whole new experience for him, and for every other Rider in the world... That was when a whole new question popped into his head. "Anurin-Elda... Are all the Riders as happy about humans joining the pact? Are the other Riders going to accept me?"

As I watched everything unfold before me, I glanced over to see another egg brought into the place of the one that had hatched. It seemed that the elves made sure five were always present for humans and elves to come and try out. It was a good thing, that much was for sure. Taking in a breathe, I looked back up the hall towards the entrance and wondered who might be waiting for us at the opening. Sunglow was very much out there, though I did not know where. As Riley spoke though, my attention went back to him for a brief moment. ”We met once before Anurin-Elda, back in Ilirea when I was a child, training with the Riders to learn magic." Looking at the leader of the riders, I watched him smile and nod before looking back at me and waiting for everyone to finish so we could leave. We were all tired, but our energy was back after all that had just happened.

”You're right, I have much to learn, and I will study hard. However, I can also help some in training some of the younger ones." I smiled and nodded, though he seemed eager, I wanted him to understand that he would have a lot to learn and it would mean sitting with the young children. They now had to know he was the first rider and though he might never be a leader of the human side, it was possible he might be… No one knew the future, but one could guess how thing would unfold. ”I am well trained with a sword, fluent in the ancient language, and in telepathy. I've even got some basic and rudimentary understanding of magic... However it's paultry in comparison to any elf, and many humans. I truly look forward to beginning my training." I nodded and took in a breath of the still air that I realized was very much harder to breathe, than the fresh above the earth.

Looking at Tasia, by her facial expression she was speaking to Sunglow and probably allowing her great sister to use her eyes fully to see the child. ”My name is Riley Cypher some call me Wolfsbane. May good fortune rule over you." I saw the smile on her face and she nodded her head and gave a little bow. ”We are very much pleased to meet you, Riley.”

[/color] I knew she was speaking with Sunglow completely, the way she spoke showed that much. As they walked towards the entrance, the elf woman moved at an ease pace and I found myself growing tired. I did not know why, but I guess the excitement had died down slightly even though I was still very much excited.

The silence was now growing, but soon, it was broken by the voice of the man. ”Anurin-Elda.. Is there anything I can do to help you... I suppose I mean us now... get back into Du Weldenvarden?" The elf looked back and came to a stop, eyes as serious as possible. Tasia had stopped as well, but I knew she held nothing in the great forest, merely memories. With her step-sister in Vroengard with us, there was nothing to go back to. ”Such things will work out, but the King will have to make that choice and we will not return until he makes it on his own without the help of his advisor.”[/color] Now I was confused. King? Weren’t the elves lead by a female? Tasia did not speak and we continued further up into the night air. As we came into the dark night, I saw the great black dragon merely looking down at us and the expectant eyes of Sunglow. The golden dragon moved over towards her sister’s side and they touched for a moment.

”Tasia… Go now to the field of riders and prepare a small tent for Riley near the young children and Leilani.”[/color] With a simple nod, she loped to the forearm of Sunglow and gracefully jumped onto the dragon back. No saddle was used and with easy movements, the dragon snaked into the sky and into the darkness. I watched with amazement. The black dragon merely looked at us and I smiled and bowed my head to her. The dragon belong to Anurin was not fond of humans at all, but she held a cold tolerance for them.

”I've got so many questions about... everything. How long until Taesi grows up? When can we start our training? What will we be doing? I'm sorry... I'm asking too many questions.. It's just..." I smiled at him and placed my hand on his free shoulder. ”In due time.”[/color] I said, a smile on my face as the sound of the next guards came to take over. ”Anurin-Elda... Are all the Riders as happy about humans joining the pact? Are the other Riders going to accept me?" The elder looked back at the rider as he went to his own dragon. ”It will take time… Not all are happy with this… Some hate humans from the past they have with your species… But… Some have learned to accept humans and even grow to care about them. You will be the first to either prove the good or the bad.”[/color] With that, he pulled himself up the large shoulder of his dragon with easy and smiled down at us before flying into the sky, disappearing in mere seconds. This left myself and the new riders to go back to the camp together, along the path. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Riley listened closely as Anurin spoke, nodding a few times "I understand, I thought I'd ask however, see if I could help." He replied, turning to face Tasia he offered her a smile, bowing to her slightly, twisting his hand over his sternum in respect for his fellow Rider. "The pleasure is mine Tasia-Svit-Kona." Taesi flapped her wings as Sunglow took off, wanting to jump and try flying, a simple prod from his mind stopped her from doing it though. He wanted her to eat first, and maybe grow a little before she really started flying. Both dragon and Rider turned to look at Anurin as he spoke again, Riley nodded, and Taesi stared at the black dragon in awe.

Riley then turned to look at Leilani, offering her a slight bow. "M'lady, I thank you again. If you ever need my services, all you have to do is call." He then motioned for her to walk, following by her easily matching her pace. Taesi looked over at Leilani as they walked, the small dragon then turned and started watching everything around them as they passed. She crawled from one shoulder to the other shoulder, watching as much as she could. Again she moved to his other shoulder, the shoulder facing Leilani, her neck snapping out and jaws closing on a dragonfly. She then turned to look at Riley, tilting her head and waiting for his response, which she got in the form of a slight nod.

Riley looked down at the gedwey ignasia again, the glow from when he had touched Taesi the first time was starting to fade finally, and would be fully gone in minutes. "You know.. I'd always wondered how Rider's got these. The gedwey ignasia." At that moment the glow faded, leaving the diffused oval on his palm a simple silver color. Clutching his fist closed, Riley looked up and paid more attention to where they were going, then glanced over to Leilani again. "M'lady, there's this woman I am with.. Her name is Ana, I am able to bring her here correct? I understand that as a Rider I must leave any previous connections behind but.." He couldn't help but pause here, his face turning red before he looked back at Leilani. "I am in love with her, I want to be able to be with her again."

As the new rider spoke with the elder rider, I watched from a slight distances. As the human male came over towards me, I smiled at him and watched as the dragons disappeared into the night. Soon, the whole land would know of the first human rider, it was a great thing. ”M'lady, I thank you again. If you ever need my services, all you have to do is call." With a smile, I nodded. ”Thank You Riley.”

[/color] As we started to walk, a few guards that were patrolling the area moved past us and continued towards the vault. It was time for a new guard detail and I was happy that my brother had evening off. The rest was needed if he was going to stay strong and alert.

As we walked, finally making our way to the tent city, the young rider spoke. ”You know.. I'd always wondered how Rider's got these. The gedwey ignasia." A smile came to her face as she looked at him. ”It is pretty interesting if you ask me.”[/color] I said in agreement with him as we walked, finally making it to where the young children slept, but beside it was already a tent set up for the new rider and his dragon. ”Here we are… For now, this will be your home… I teach the lessons needed for the young children over in that tent and my tent is right over there.”[/color] I said, a smile on my face as I stood and then walked into his tent to at least show it to him.

”M'lady, there's this woman I am with.. Her name is Ana, I am able to bring her here correct? I understand that as a Rider I must leave any previous connections behind but…" Looking over at him as I corrected a few small items in the tent, I looked back ahead. ”I am in love with her, I want to be able to be with her again." Standing up straight, I turned towards him. ”She can come, but your training takes priority. Until you are done training, you might not see her often and even after training, depending on what is happening in the world will depend on if you can be with her fully. Riders can have families, it is just difficult.”[/color]

Riley smiled as she let him into his new tent, suddenly feeling very old knowing that he was possibly going to be the oldest person in training with the children. He pushed the thought aside, Ana would be proud of him. And he could bring her here to him! They could be together, they would probably only rarely see each other, but it would be something, it was more than they had now. Riley looked around the tent, Taesi flying to a pillow by his bed and curling up on it. The dragon then suddenly leapt from her pillow and landed under the bed, there was the sound of a small scuffle. Then the violet dragon came out from under the bed, swallowing the last of a lizard before returning to her pillow. "Well, I guess that takes care of her needing to eat for now."

Riley turned to Leilani and then took a few steps, looking around the tent a few times. He then sat down on the bed, looking between Taesi, his palm, and Leilani. Standing he went to the small desk, then turning back to Leilani, "Is there a library here? Somewhere I can get books, scrolls, anything to study. I'm afraid my lessons at Ilirea were long ago... In truth I'm eager for anything to read." It was true too, he was eager to start his training, but it had been a long time since he had been able to enjoy reading for leisure. Even with the last year he had stopped being a mercenary he hadn't been able to read much. He'd been too busy either traveling, or working to earn money for himself and Ana.

Riley reached down and scratched Taesi's head lightly, causing the small dragon to look up at her Rider and hum. Taesi rolled over onto her back, her belly bulging and she yawned, snapping her mouth shut with a faint sound. She scurried back to her feet, then circled her pillow a few times before laying down and sleeping. Riley smiled at the small dragon, before resting his elbows on his knees. The link between their minds stayed open, allowing Riley to see into her dreams. The first of which being to grow into a big and strong dragon, causing the young Rider to smile again.
