My voice was level, my words showing that I was very much happy for what my sister had accomplished, but now it was time to put my own works into play. My uncle was old, my sister had no plans to marry the man I wanted her to marry, and my brother… ”Soon, Turin will be prepared to have the throne. You are such a good Governess, you lead the city well.” I smiled brightly at my uncle. ”You had him taught well, uncle. And me as well.” Turning to leave my chair at the other end of the table, I allowed my hand to go over the top of the glass quickly before facing my uncle and walking down to him. My red dress hung to my body like a second skin, it flowed around my legs like a water fall and my hair was pulled from my face in a beautiful braid. As I handed him my glass, I felt his strong hands grasp my wrist and pull me towards him harshly. ”You should let your hair down more.” Wine tainted breath hit my nostrils harshly. ”You look beautiful with your long black hair.” With a gentle touch, his stroked my cheek before guzzling the wine. Standing up straight I smiled at him. ”Of course… Who am I to disobey my king?” With a tone that show my age of youth, I pulled my hair from its bands and allowed it to flow around my shoulders before I turned to stand at my end of the table.
Pouring the wine slowly, I lifted it to my lips and drank my own before pouring my uncle some. ”It is wonderful, isn’t it Nayeli? The humans are now allowed as Riders! Maybe our truce with the elves will be better, hmm?” Looking at my uncle I smiled at him and nodded. ”Of course, Uncle Azuan. The humans have been waiting and finally the riders take hold of the idea… We have Leilani to thank for this.”
TWO YEARS AGO
”This will do it, Governess Richards… Just give him little by little if you want to make him sick and when you are ready, give it all to him.” I looked at the vile of powder and smiled. ”Prepare more, I want to make this last a while.” A simple nod came from the maker, who smiled at me with toothy grin. Placing it in my bag, I handed him gold pieces before pulling my black hood over my head and leaving. No royalty came to this place, it was dark and disgusting. Homeless and lab rats of the potion makers were all that were here. Mounting the black stallion, I pulled him around and headed back towards the back entrance to the castle. Today would be the day my secret plan began… Turin was the leader of my army, I was going to be in the perfect spot to be Queen. I had no worries…
PRESENT TIME
The sound of coughing could be heard from the other side of the table. My ice blue eyes watched him ever so carefully and I smiled at him as he touched his chest. Eyes became wide as he struggled for air. ”Nayeli… Help… Me.” I stood, moving over slowly and careful, my hair moving over my shoulder as I smiled at him. ”It is time for fresh blood to be in that seat… To be within’ the throne of Broddering… Long Live The King.” The fear that flashed over his eyes was one that came to many victims. I was not trained to be a Queen, that came later. No, my true skills screamed Assassin and it was what I truly got my joy from. But I wanted the throne and my brother was only going to work with the riders, I didn’t want that. No servant was in this area, no one would know the truth of this night… Death had come to my uncle, the old man was one who everyone knew was dying, but they didn’t know I was killing him. I now had to play it correctly, I had to leave as if I had been gone for a while… Turning to the door, I moved throw the halls until I came to the kitchen. ”Cook… My uncle wishes to finish his dinner alone, to not bother him… He is tired and just wishes for a moment of peace. He will call you when he is finished.”
TWO WEEKS PRIOR IN ILLREA
”After much time and thought, we the council have decided that humans shall become riders… With their growing kingdom, it is only fair and wise to have them as a part of the riders.” I watched my sister jump up in excitement, hugging a elven woman who wore barely any clothing at all. Beside them was the strange man she called Darek. With a smile, he stood and hug my sister as well and I merely smiled. ”We did it! Oh gosh, Thank You Tasia…” It seemed that many riders had helped my sister, but that didn’t matter. As I watched, a few eyes were on me as I smiled to the council and stood to speak for the Broddering Kingdom in my uncles Absents. ”I come before you great Council, as speaker of my Uncle, the King. Thank You for allowing us to become equals with the elves. For many years it has felt like we were second hand to the Elven Nation and now, we can finally grow as equals and I hope, Help each other in the future.” My words were taken with ease and I knew others would not see it as such, but it didn’t matter. Tonight, I would get to fly home in style, I would ride upon the back of one of the dragons.
PRESENT TIME
Making my way down the halls, my eyes set upon the door of my sister. Within’ my hand, a dagger which would soon hold the blood of my sister upon its blade. It was late and my sister had retired early to sleep. By now, she would be asleep and an easy victim. I did not want to fight with my sister. I loved her, but she and her group of allies would hold tight with my brother and I would never become what I wanted to become. Inside, I screamed for her forgiveness, but it was the only way that I would help my nation. Opening the door, I was met with a brightness of lamps that were lit and standing across the chamber was my sister in a beautiful emerald dress and the man I knew as he lover, the strange beast known as Darek. Their eyes were upon me and then the knife. I had little time to react before I felt air hit my face from his wings, which sent me back slightly from the force and then they were gone. I rushed to the balcony and saw his dark figure going over the lights below.
I ran from the chambers, I had to reach my brother’s estate which was right outside the castle walls. If they warned him, I would never make it to him in time. They would run to the riders and they would be untouchable. As I ran through the castle, I finally felt the cool air of the spring night and then saw my brother and sister, as well as many of my brother’s comrades galloping away. ”No!” My voice was more of a snarl then a yell and I threw the dagger to the ground… No matter, they would not bother me now… No, I was about to make sure everyone thought they were dead. Glancing around, a man watched from the shadows and soon, I was beside him. ”You… And your woman.” I pointed to the broad beside him, ”Are coming with me!” I pulled the woman by her arm towards the estate of my brothers. ”This is your new home, be grateful that my brother left it.”
After I closed the door, I made sure they could not open it and I made sure the windows were unable to be used to escape. After that, I sent the torches from the streets into the building… No one would know the difference… Two skeletons would be thought of as my siblings. I would be queen…
TWO WEEKS LATER – LEILANI’S POV
Looking at the information from home was not something I had wanted to do. My sister had declared us dead by a fire of my brother’s estate where two skeletons were found. Queen Nayeli of Broddering was all I could comprehend and it wasn’t something I enjoyed. Oh sure, she hadn’t started any problems, and probably wouldn’t for many years, but the fact was, she was queen now. Turin did not seem to dwell on it much, he and his friends were safe, as well as his younger sister, me. Darek was safe too… Which brought a smile to my face… Had I not been with him, I would have been dead. Letting out a sigh I rubbed the top of my head and looked out the tent flap. Yea, a tent… Ever since the riders had allowed humans to join the pact, the elven city of Illrea had been overrun with more elves. Dragon Riders were no longer welcomed in the city, they had to leave and then the city was closed off. Homes were lost(even my villa). I had arrived the day before the elves had come and all the Riders began to prepare to leave. The Queen wanted us out of the city and from what I heard, no one was allowed there anymore. Why? I wasn’t sure, but it had happened.
After searching for a good home, the riders had decided the best was a place called Vroengard, an island of the northern shore of the mainland. The trip had been long and the humans who came with the riders had to take a boat. At night, the dragons swam with us to protect us from any sea creature, which there were a few. During the day, the protected the skies from the strange animals that flew. Once we were finally to the coast, we were greeted by people… A village on the edge of the island that inhabited the island. It was small, but we told them we were here for peace and we then went further inland. Elves of different skills had been working hard for weeks now, but we were still in tents. The dragons had already found a perfect place for the eggs to be laid and a place for themselves to sleep in dens within’ the dead volcano.
This was going to be a long adventure, I knew that… But, I was determined to get a few human riders going strong. Already, human children who had traveled with us were in studies with some of the elder riders, learning everything they could. No human had become a rider just yet, but there were plenty of humans here. My brother had become one of the many guards to protect the vault during this time of rebuilding. It was nice to know someone was guarding the eggs. Closing my eyes, I prayed to whatever being might be listening, asking for an easy time here and to hope that we would be safe… Safe in this new home… In Vroengard.
