I sat in the carriage with Awiti beside me. I wore the beautiful emerald dress that Darek Von Cleft had gotten for me a few months prior. It was beautiful and so very comfortable. It was emerald, with golden trim upon it and I wore a matching cloak that had pockets on the inside of it. With us was Taeli Shealaes, a were-tiger who worked closely with the riders and had been given the mission to help myself and guard me since I had sent Sean away. I kinda missed the man, but I knew it was better if he worked for Nayeli somewhere else in her order. I wanted nothing to do with it anymore. I had my mission for the riders and the love of my life was back with me. One day, I would be with him forever, wherever the riders were. I just knew deep down I would always be with the riders, I had renounced my title, and I was no longer a princess in my eyes or the eyes of the riders. I was just a noble woman now, came from good blood.

I looked outside the carriage, seeing that my sister had cleaned up both the lower and upper parts of the city, wanting to show off the city to everyone. The riders and elves would still not be impressed, though the humans, we would and I was very so slightly. She had done very at cleaning things up. She did care about the people of her city and it could be seen as we went through the city. The farms were now guarded to keep the bandits from taking things and more guards were around the poorer parts of the city. My sister was doing well, but inside, she was still cold and she wanted more power. I let out a sigh and I felt a hand on my shoulder. ”Don’t worry, Leilani… One day Nayeli will understand that not everything is about power.”

[/color] I smiled at her and touched her hand with my own, hoping that one day she would see that, but knowing that deep down, it would never happen.

It did not take long for the horses and carriage to pull into the castle courtyard and I moved out of the carriage, getting a few bows from those around me. I helped my sister out and then Taeli came out, dressed in a very simple, but elegant orange dress. She had her hair fixed and braided down her back, a few strains down and tangled with feathers. Her eyes were exotic and beautiful and she wore no make-up at all. Her skin was darker then my own, tanned by the sun and due to bring from another land far from here. We moved towards the castle, noticing the three dragons of the riders who I knew were coming to the party. They were all sleeping with elven guards beside them as well as a few human guards who worked with the riders. I was sure that Turin had also made sure they were well guarded as well. I smiled and moved through the castle, noticing someone pushing the doors open with magic, which I knew had to come from an elf, but I had not seen them.

As we entered, I noticed that my sister saw me, but I kept moving, Awiti with me as well as Taeli before Tasia joined me. ”She is not too happy.”[/color] Tasia smiled at me as Sunglow came over and grumbled slightly. ”These bodies do not work will with me, Mi’lady.”[/color] I smiled at her and touched her shoulder. ”It suits you though… You are both beautiful, as normal.”[/color] I smiled at them as we moved through the crowd.

Ever since the incident with Count Genji I had not strayed far from Illirea or Brodding. Always being in one of these places trying to ease tensions between the humans and the elves. I had heard rumors that their was a rebellion growing in the elves on this pact being made. But the riders had told me not to worry that they were sending their best with Leilani on her travels to collect the children. And as so I had trusted the riders and their decision. I had also informed them of the incident that had happened in Brodding so that they would have heard it directly from the source instead of from rumors that made my actions seem worst of then they were. By all means it still did not make them happy in the least, to know I had laid my hands not only on a human noble, but also a figure of a entirely different nation they knew very little on did not make them happy. And though I was given a warning, I knew they would be keeping an eye on me when Count Genji was around even though they understood why I had acted in such a way it did not excuse the actions.

The rest of my time was spent in Brodding. Mostly with Turin, but on the few occasions she would allow me, with Leilanis sister Nayeli. It was clear to see in these few times seeing her sister that she did not enjoy me or my company. Nor did she approve of me courting her sister, but as Turin had made perfectly clear for all to know, I had his permission and that was all I needed besides my loves herself. But even though my time spent with Nayeli was mostly a waste of time, the opposite could be said for my time spent with Turin. I learned much about her brother while she had been away these past few months. And I had hopped I had taught him just as much. Each morning I was in the city I helped train the soldiers, they were all well trained, but against an elf they would be hard pressed, even after me training them for they had limitations that the people of my race did not. In a small quick fight they had the advantage if they could catch me by surprise, but after a long amount of time went by was when they started to lose faith, that is what I had tried to fix.

Now the ball had come for their uncle's birthday, and though I had only seen the man a few times in passing and never spoken to him I could tell he was a man who enjoyed the finer things in life unlike Turin who could live a simple life and still be happy. As I sat up on a tower watching the people enter I soon saw Sunglows large body flying in the sky until it set down. As I saw this I knew my love had returned and so I lept from the tower and at the last moment let my wings lose, catching the air as it lifted me up and stopped me from falling to my death. It did not take long after that to find Leilani as all I had to do was stay a good distance away from Nayeli to find her. As quietly as I could in walked snuck up to her, but not quite enough it would seem as both Taeli and Tasia turned to look in my direction. I silently sent them a mental plea asking them to be silent and not alert Leilani that I was their and quickly finished making my way to her. And you are the fairest of them all my lady. I said to her in the ancient language as I wrapped my arms around her and made a rose appear in my hand. I have missed you. Was all I could get out as I enjoyed seeing her once more.

Then turning to the others I greeted them all in kind until I finally came to Awiti. And how have you been Awiti? I have missed our long days and nights together in Illirea. I said this extending my gloved hand to her as well and making her a rose as well, this one as green as her eyes. As I looked at all of them I felt slightly under dressed. Well except for being compared to the rider I guess. All I wore was a simple black outfit with the outline of a white dragon on it. My cloak being non existent.

Rilcha sat in the carriage with his lips pressed into a hard line and his brows furrowed together, feeling uneasy even through the had not yet arrived there. As to where there was, he was still unsure. It had been explained more than once to him, yet the concept was one he could not wrap his head around. Dance? Ball? Why was it even called a ball? From what he was told there was nothing round, or remotely interesting about it. There were people, and music, food, and uncomfortable clothing. Far more so than the usual.

The emerald tunic he had been shoved into after a vigorous washing itched him in all the places that were the hardest to scratch. It was far too fine for his tastes, the gold trim looking like they had melted down coins and painted the edges. The britches he had been wrested into were a milky white, and it had been a struggle to keep them so. They had already been changed twice, the first time because of grass stains, the second because of jam stains, there most certainly would have been a third as well if he had not been watched like a hawk to make sure not a spec of dust got on it.

The worst of it all had been the bathing, being scrubbed with so many different scents, being fussed over, his hair being mangled by so many people. He had fought back, rather valiantly too, kicking and screaming like an infant all the while. It had all been for naught, he had still been pinched and primed to a twisted perfection. His cheeks were pinched until rosy, and his curls were brushed until they shined like satin. He hated it. Everything felt unnatural, and he just wanted to sit under the bed and draw on the floor with ink soaked fingers. That was happy, that was safe, that was most certainty more enjoyable than sitting in stiff clothing heading off to a flood of people that he would have to come up with an idea on the spot to avoid.

He pressed up against the side of the carriage and closed his eyes, the jittering and shaking causing him to feel rather queasy. A thin arm wrapped around his belly and he curled up on the seat in a fetal position, not wanting to leave the carriage now that they had arrived. Not wanting was a bit of an understatement of his feelings on the matter, he was clutching the cushions so hard that his knuckles had turned pink. He would not leave. The carriage was safe from the horrors that awaited outside its open door, and he was content to stay inside.

Savan had no idea what to make of any of this. All he knew was that he was on his way to some variety of completely frivolous event and had been made to look the part. They had taken his tattered clothes, his armour, his shield and his sword and dressed him in some kind of prissy formalwear that he was most definitely not fond of.

Of course, first there had been the task of getting him cleaned, which, he was sure many of the servants had griped about, given that Savan had never bathed once in his life before... He had no idea why they were griping, he was a warrior, his place was certainly not at the kind of formal event he was not worth. He should have been assigned to other duties, why Nemesis Morona and Kaime had seen fit to order his co-operation with... Whatever it was these people wanted him for, Savan may never know.

He briefly looked down at his signet ring; they had originally taken that from him as well. But, that was the one thing that Savan would simply not allow himself to be without, and he had originally requested that they return it to him immediately, however, when they had initially refused Savan had become agitated and lashed out at the person nearest to him. Several long moments later they had returned the ring to him and had apologised, claiming that their purpose had been to clean it and nothing more.

Savan had scowled at them and had told them outright that if they had actually told him that was what they were doing then he would have allowed them to do as they had been ordered. They hadn’t been lying, either. Looking at his ring now he was able to appreciate that it was the cleanest he had ever seen it... But, whatever good-mood that may have put him in was immediately mitigated by his present situation.

The clothes that they had ended up dressing him in were far too thin for his liking, which made him feel as though he was naked. He disliked the soft feel that they had to them, and to top that off, the button-collar of the clothes they had dressed him in was too damned tight. For the duration of his time in this carriage he had, had one of his fingers hooked into the collar in an attempt to loosen it, however, so far all of his attempts to lessen his discomfort had been in vain.

However, he had kept his peace; Savan was not one to burden his compatriots with what was little more than a trifling discomfort, no matter how annoying he found it.

His eyes wandered around the carriage as he continued trying to loosen the collar. He had, much like the nature of his present situation, not known what to think of the other people in this carriage with him. So far, his observations on all of them were that they had, had at least some semblance of a nice, easy life. And, they were likely all worth something to someone, so he had trouble figuring out exactly why he was here with them.

He pushed the thought to the side as his thoughts returned to that of the damned collar, how could anyone stand being dressed like this?

Gregory let out a quiet sigh as he stared out the carriage window. His fingers once more stroked the soft silk linen tunic that Lord Lantieri had given him. The tunic and matching pants were a rich, fiery red trimmed in gold with a small embroidered dragon on each sleeve. It was one of four such sets that Lord Lantieri had ordered be made for him, and it was all fine Itasan silk to boot. Gregory was kind of embarrassed to wear any of them, to be perfectly honest, but they were going to a fancy formal ball and you couldn’t go to one of those dressed in your house clothes. He knew that, but this was the first time he would be going to one as a guest rather than as a server. He was more put together than he had been in a while: his hair neatly brushed and trimmed, though not really cut (he had been quite adamant about it when they had tried); his clothes wrinkle-free and his shoes polished and gleaming. Even his fur hat had been spruced up and the leather-strap glasses cleaned until they shined. It still brought a small smile to his face when he looked back at the whole pre-ball process and recalled how surprised the servants had been when he had proceeded to not only bathe himself, but dress himself as well without a word of complaint or a hint of difficulty. When one servant had remarked on this, comparing him to the other boy from Teirm, Gregory had simply shrugged and said, “Lord Lantieri keeps a clean citadel. Even if we slaves don’t always look perfect, we at least are clean from head to toe.”

And then he had been reminded that he wasn’t a slave now. It was still greatly disquieting to be…not a slave anymore. He was free. Free to learn to read and write, free to explore the world, free to do what he wanted without having to worry about being beaten for it. It was daunting. It was why his hands kept straying to the fabric of his clothes and to the odd fur hat and leather-strap glasses that had belonged to his father – the latter because it was a constant in his life and the former because it reminded him of what he had rapidly come to realize was home.

He flicked his gaze from the window to look at his carriage companions. There was the oldest boy, Toyoshiro, who strongly reminded Gregory of Lord Lantieri and Lord Lantieri’s people. Toyoshiro was very serious and very difficult to read. Probably not much chance of conversation there, so Gregory hadn’t even tried. Then there was the other Teirm boy…Rilcha, he thought was the boy’s name. The kid was a neurotic mess from what Gregory had heard from the servants who had heard about it from the other servants who had cleaned Rilcha. The boy had kicked and screamed and fussed something terrible to avoid being bathed, only to fail miserably at that endeavor and proceed to be scolded and watched ceaselessly because he had stained his trousers twice before they had even left for Carvala. He did feel a bit bad for Rilcha. The smaller boy was even more out of step here than Gregory was and was visibly upset by everything. But they weren’t taken from Teirm to be babied – they’d been taken away for education and Gregory couldn’t understand why anyone would want to avoid such an opportunity.

And then there was the other quiet boy – Savan, or something strange like that. Gregory had been watching the boy off and on for the entire trip here. Savan wasn’t from Alagaesia – you could tell that just by looking at him. It made him endlessly fascinating compared to the other two. And while Gregory had tried to take in as much as he could about Savan without talking to him – the kid had discouraged conversation from the outset – what had ultimately captured Gregory’s focus was how the boy kept fiddling with his collar. It was a simple buttoned collar and easy to adjust, but Savan had spent the entire trip alternately staring at his ring, looking around the carriage, or trying to loosen the collar. It was slowly driving Gregory crazy as the realization rapidly dawned on him that Savan had no idea how to loosen the collar and had no intention of asking someone else to do it. It was maddening and when the carriage finally rolled to a stop at their destination, Gregory couldn’t take it anymore. He leaned towards Savan, who was seated across from him, and slapped the boy’s hands away from the collar. “Stop that. You might tear the stitches or something,” he snapped as he deftly unbuttoned the collar and adjusted it so that it rested much more comfortably on the boy’s neck. He didn’t bother to button it back up, instead folding it in such a way that it still looked formal without being stifling. Finally satisfied, he leaned back with a huff as the carriage door was opened. “Next time, just ask instead of fidgeting the whole time in discomfort. I doubt any of us are gonna judge you for not knowing what you’re doing. Right guys?” he added as he climbed out of the carriage and stood in the courtyard of the King’s castle – though he didn’t realize it because he hadn’t turned to look at what was behind him just yet. He smiled at the group in what he hoped was a reassuring manner. “So let’s make the best of this ball and then we can go back to something a little less weird. Sound good?”
