I woke as the morning sun filled my room with its first light of life. I pulled my body from the soft mattress and looked around. He was gone, Darek had left after I had fallen asleep, just as he always did. I was still in the green gown he had gotten for me and I noticed that the cloak that came with it was sitting on a chair. I stood, my hair in a slight mess before I pulled on a string that signaled my friend that the coast was clear. ”Well, look who finally woke from her slumber.” The large tiger moved from my washing chambers carefully towards me, coming up to my body and allowing me to place my hand upon her large head. ”I am sorry, Taeli… I do not mean to keep you hidden from everyone my friend, but I doubt my sister would enjoy your presence here.”

[/color] The sound of a mental chuckle could be heard coming from the large beast as she moved away. ”Your sister can do nothing to me child… The dragon riders sent me to protect you… You are important to them as much as you are to this empire. You keep peace.”[/color] I smiled at her as I turned from her to go to the balcony.

”You know, I think I might go into the court yard today as my… Two Legged form.”[/color] I turned to see the woman before me. She was beautiful, with long red hair that went past her shoulders and down to her back. She wore very little clothing, only some cloth that hid her torso area and another cloth that hide her bottom half, the rest of her was well seen. ”Well, if you are, we need to get you into someone more lady like.”[/color] I said, gaining a smile from the woman. She still had sharp looking teeth like any cat, in fact, you could clearly see the sharp fang like teeth, though they were not nearly as big as when she was normal. She nodded and I moved to my wardrobe and opened it, pulling out a simple brown dress that was very pretty and perfect for her. As the were-tiger removed her little bit of clothing, I helped her dress in the brown dress. As we finished, the were-tiger then used her skilled hands to pull her hair back into a tight and neat pony-tail that swayed down her back to just above her hips. It was so beautiful that I could not help but stand in Awe. Taeli was beautiful in her woman form.

”Your brother came this morning and is waiting for you outside your door.”[/color] I looked at her, smiling as I realized she had been keeping watch over me during the morning. I nodded and she helped me brush my hair and straighten up the gown that I had worn from the night before. The beautiful emerald dress was tight upon my body, the long sleeves hiding my arms from anyone. The golden trim lace was vibrant in the sun of the streamed through my windows and I pulled the matching cloak with the golden trim upon it over my shoulders. The trim, however, made a beautiful dragon which was breathing fire and held two beautiful rubies as the beast eyes. Taeli admired the beautiful work and clapped her hand. ”Seem liked that half elf did a pretty good job.”[/color] She said in a playful voice as she brought over my leather brown belt that went very nicely with the green dress and placed it around my hips. She made sure that my dagger was placed to where I could get to it if needed.

Soon, we went out into the hallway, my brother surprised to see someone with me. ”Turin, this is Taele, we were up most of the evening talking and we both fell asleep early this morning.”[/color] My brother back away and bowed to the were-tiger and walked with me down the corridor. As we walked, Turin told me quickly of who had come into the city and I smiled brightly, though unknown to him I already knew this, he could see my excitement. I quickly made my pace faster and we moved through the castle in no time, heading towards the court yard where my brother said he left him under a large oak tree. I could not wait to see him again, to give him a hug again. As we finally made it to the last stairs, I picked up my emerald dress and Taeli moved quickly behind me.

As he came into my view, I smiled brightly and moved quickly towards him. ”Darek!”[/color] I played the surprised woman very well in my opinion and as I got closer open my arms and jumped into his own. I felt his arms wrap around me and I put my hands and arms around his neck. I wanted to kiss him, but I kept myself from doing such a thing. I rubbed my fingers along the ribbon I still had that belong to him. Everything faded away, I did not even think about Genji as I gave my hug to my true love, my body melted into his own. I wanted him to take me away, take me far away so we could live in peace without the nation breathing down my neck.

I released him, back up and smoothing out my dress. ”It is so good to see you, Darek.”[/color] I said as my brother finally made it over to me and Taeli stood to the side. She did not speak, but I had a feeling she knew who Darek was.

It was just before dawn when Darek had the Brodding Capital in view. It had taken him the whole night to get back in time with everything he needed, and there were many things indeed. Slowly he looked behind him and saw the sun rising. Wondering what his carriage would look like in the morning sun he opened up the carriage door that was made of a dark wood with bands of gold woven into it,and sure enough it glowed like all the riches in the world. The hardest part had to have been finding his horse in Illirea, for he almost never used the two most precious gifts his parents had sent to him many years ago. He himself was garbed in emerald green breechers, and a matching shirt, with a dark brown cloak trailing behind him, in it was emblazed a Golden dragon intertwining with a green one. The eyes of the golden dragon were filled with rubies, while those of the green were filled with the clearest, brightest emerald in all of the world.

It did not take long for his carriage to pull into the capital, and when he arrived he sent a messenger to Turin asking him to meet him at the palace gates. Sure enough the man had been there waiting. The young man had much potential, and Darek could see him ruling the empire very easily and having a time of peace. When they were close enough to each other Darek gave a short bow to Turin and spoke " It is an honor to see you again Lord Turin, I hope all has been well for you." And as they talked Darek quietly followed him to the courtyard where he told Turin his reasons for coming on such short notice. " First of all I would like to congratulate you on your new found role. And so have brought you this." Darek said as he pulled out a sword that was clearly elven made. " This is for you, Turin." Darek said proudly before adding " There would have been a suit to go with it but...complications were meet. It shall be here soon though I am sure." Darek said with a smile before sitting down. " My second reason for coming, " Darek said now taken on a more serious tone," is to ask you to allow me to court your sister. As a noble myself and a high standing member of the order I see no problem with my request. But for the sake of both our people a bridge must be made. I offer you this bridge so that in the hopes peace can follow between both of our people." Darek said letting this all sink into Turins head. Then he sat and listened to what Turin had to say.

Turin left him after a while to get Leilani from her room and so with nothing else to do he went to a bench and began to sing of his homeland. On and on he sang until he saw one of his oldest friends peeking out of Leilani's window. Mentaly he shouted up to Taele " Have I not seen you enough dressed that way for a life time." Darek said with a laugh remembering his first time meeting the werecat. On and on they talked catching up on what each had missed of the other until Darek saw Turin Leilani and Taele walking out into the courtyard.

As Leilani came into view he saw here smile widen across her face, it had only been a few hours of being apart, but he could tell she was not happy that he had left her bed last night even though he had told her he would. " Leilani." Darek said happily as they meet in the middle and she jumped into his arms. Darek easily caught her and spun her around, their cloaks making it look like three dragons were dancing were they stood. " I'm sorry I have not come sooner, as you know I have been with your sister, and then running a few errands, some personal. Others for the riders. And it is good to see you to ma kometama imora." Darek said happily as the others walked forward Darek almost chuckled at the fact Leilani had gotten the tiger in real close, but refused to show he knew her openly infront of anyone yet.

Genji’s eyes snapped open shortly after sunrise. He bolted upright in his bed, scrabbling for Seisui and Hinote in his total disorientation. The whole world seemed unnaturally bright and sharp as his pupils dilated. Where was he? When had he arrived? And most importantly why? This was not Itasus. It wasn’t even Teirm. Drab stone walls and barely comfortable bedding were his only indicators of his location – and that meant he could be anywhere in Alagaesia, for all he knew. He felt a panicked scream working its way up his throat as he thumped gracelessly out of bed, his sword sheaths skittering across the floor and out of his reach. Thank Yawata no Kami that his breath was catching in his throat. He had no idea who was nearby and if they were allies or enemies. He had to get out. How many people were in the building? What level was he on? Would there be ranged fighters or would he only have melee to contend with if it came down to fighting his way free? Was there something suitable here to make temporary armor out of?

A gentle knock sounded at the door to the chambers he had apparently slept in, both slicing through his fear and spiking it higher. A comfortingly familiar gruff voice called quietly through the door. “Kazan-sama? Are you awake?” His body trembled as things slowly began clicking into place. He was in Carvala – in an estate granted to him by Nayeli Richards, niece of the Broddring king. He had Rikuto and Mami with him. Raiden and Hiroshi were still safely back in Teirm attending to business for him while he continued his attempts to woo Leilani into marriage with him. He was in no more danger here than he would have been in Teirm. He had probably been dreaming again. He prayed he hadn’t shouted, though he somehow doubted that he would be heard through the walls. He certainly never had been in the Citadel and the walls of this manor home were similar in construction and thickness.

Genji’s heart and breathing gradually slowed as he rubbed his face clear of sleep. He called out in a voice that was only slightly strained, “Yes, Rikuto. I am awake.” He picked himself gingerly off the cold floor as Rikuto pushed the door open and entered the count’s bedchamber. Her eyes widened slightly upon seeing Genji in his current state of dress – or rather, his lack thereof – but chose to not comment on it. Instead she gazed at a spot on the wall just beyond Genji. The count resisted snorting and went about picking up his katana and wakizashi. “I wished to ensure you were not…uncomfortable with our new accommodations, Kazan-sama. I know that you are very particular about such things.” Genji flinched only slightly at the statement. That was the one thing he never wanted his guards to see – with the exception of Raiden, who had seen both the weaker and darker side of Genji’s personality. But the other three? They had no business knowing about all that – no one did. He tried to not let his displeasure show, choosing to simply grunt in reply as he returned the swords to the bed. “I took the liberty of preparing your bath, Kazan-sama. I hope you do not mind.” Genji turned and raised a slender eyebrow at her. She shrugged. “I know that it will be…unconventional. But I assumed you would wish to scrub yourself clean before offering morning prayers to Yawata no Kami.” The count stared at his guard for a long moment before giving a snort and smirking. Without a word, he followed Rikuto out of the bedroom and into the bathroom so that she could help him scrub his back before he sank into the comfortably warm bathwater. He wouldn’t take long. Morning devotions would be necessary for his sanity in the coming days. “Rikuto...one of you find the sea-colored tunic set. I'm feeling that the image of fluidity is needed today.”

Genji pulled sharply on the reins of his Yonaguni mare Chitose – a gift last year from his brother Hikaru, who had gone on to become a horse breeder – as they entered the courtyard of the castle. His eyes were slightly widened at the sight before him. Mami and Rikuto followed his example on their bay Caspians. They, too, stared at the small group that was clustered together in the courtyard.

What, exactly, was Genji seeing here? Who was this white-haired man that had Leilani all aglow and practically draped over him? And who was the exotic woman with them? What was this easy familiarity between the two…as if they were lovers? The surprise that had briefly flared across his features vanished instantly and was replaced by a distant, almost cold expression. Was this the real reason for Leilani’s reluctance concerning their engagement? His hands clenched around the reins until the knuckles turned white; he then forced himself to loosen his grip and dismount from Chitose as a few servants came forward to take the steeds from the Itasans and to the stables. Genji took a moment so he could calm himself. When he had thoroughly buried his anger, he slowly approached the group – giving a small cough to announce his presence. He felt a pathetic flash of pride at being taller than this white-haired…elf? She was in love with an elf? Yawata no Kami, how low had he fallen to feel such a disgusting amount of pride over something so insignificant in the face of Leilani’s preferences? And weren't elves supposed to be far taller than this man?

He shoved the emotion aside and bowed slightly to the group. “Lord Turin, Lady Leilani.” He gave slightly deeper bows to the exotic woman and the white-haired elf-thing. His hands twitched slightly, but he successfully managed to keep them from inching towards the katana at his side and the wakizashi on his back. “A pleasure to meet you both, I am sure. I am Count Genji Lantieri of Teirm and these charming ladies behind me are my guards Ishinomori Rikuto and Fukakawa Mami.” He paused to allow for introductions to be made. Once they were, he continued. “I apologize for interrupting what is obviously a…joyous reunion. I was simply wondering when milady would like to begin her lessons today.” He tilted his head slightly to one side, as if he was curious. “Or was I incorrect in recalling when milady promised to begin?”

Turin’s Point of View
”My Lord?” I turned from my chair as I looked over the military security going on in many of the cities. A few hawks were resting beside my window with messages that I was sending to the many points in the capital city and a few were going to go to the other cities and such. ”A messenger is here, My Lord…” I nodded and stood, moving from my desk to greet the messenger who was standing outside my home which was outside the castle. As I walked out, I pulled a cloak from the wall and threw it over my shoulder, latching it as I got closer to the man on the horse. ”My Lord, I have come ahead of my Master, Darek Von Cleft, whom is just short of entering the city.” A smile came to my face and I nodded a thanks before signaling my stable boy to bring me my horse.

As I rode to the main gates of the castle, I arrived just in time to see the dark wood with golden laid into it. I smiled as my friend arrived at the gate. I sent my horse to the nearby holding area with the other horses that belong to the guards who protecting the castle. As he bowed I gave a simple smile and nodded back. ”It is an honor to see you again Lord Turin, I hope all has been well for you." I nodded to him. As I had recently taken over the whole army of the Broddering Empire, it had been rather stressful and I thought my young body was started to age rapidly, but each day I was reminded that I was still young. ”I have been well, Darek.”

[/color] I said to him as we moved to the Courtyard of the castle. ”First of all I would like to congratulate you on your new found role. And so have brought you this." I turned, amazed at the sword that was before me. The Broddering Seal rest upon the pommel, the blade was hidden by a beautiful seath, and the dragon figured that decorated the pommel was beyond beautiful.

I took it into my hand pulling it out of it sheath and looking at the blade which was beautiful and sharp. I could not help but allow a smile to come to my face before looking back at him. ”This is for you, Turin… There would have been a suit to go with it but... Complications were meet. It shall be here soon though I am sure." I could not believe what I was hearing, but I gave a nod, calling over one of my head guards, Dave and handing him my old sword before replacing it with my new one. ”Thank You Darek, this will be an excellent addition to any of my armor pieces and I am sure the new armor will look great.”[/color] I said, wrapping the cloth strips to my belt before returning my eyes back to him.

”My second reason for coming." The serious tone made me turn my full attention to the man as we walked towards the court yard. ”Is to ask you to allow me to court your sister. As a noble myself and a high standing member of the order I see no problem with my request. But for the sake of both our people a bridge must be made. I offer you this bridge so that in the hopes peace can follow between both of our people." It was words I wish I had heard many months ago before Genji had come into the picture. I placed a hand on the man’s shoulder and smiled. ”I would highly enjoy it… You make my sister happy, however, my sister, Nayeli, had talked my uncle into arranging a marriage for Leilani, though she has fought claw and fang against it, I fear it is only a matter of time before it is forced… I am sure I could speak with my uncle about it.”[/color] I wanted to see my sister happy and now that Darek was here, I felt better about her happiness. ”I am sure she will want to see you, I will go and get her.”[/color] Giving a warm smile before going into the castle, disappearing from the half elf’s sight.

Taeli’s Point of View
My ambered colored cat eyes looking out the window of the chambers my ward was within’. I had been given the task to protect her from all danger by the rider known as Tasia, whom believed that this human would be the peace keeper. I held faith in the young woman, for she was wise and held true knowledge and a heart of peace. My hair, which was once decorated in beautiful father was plain and braided quickly. The dress I wore was strange and it made me feel odd, but what I noticed below was something that I could not help but smile about it. ”Have I not seen you enough dressed that way for a life time." I smiled, my fangs showing down at the hybrid before mentally I spoke to him. ”This is only temporary you two-legged winged-creature… I will soon be back in my normal and feel much more at home.”[/color] I said, turning my back from the window as I helped Leilani and soon started down with her brother, the young Turin. We laughed about our first meeting, though it was only mentally and my facial expression did not change at all as we spoke.

We spoke mostly of when we first met and how I had surprised nearly all the riders in my fashion of clothing taste. It was really not much clothing at all, but it was what I wore and all the riders knew it too. They did not bother me now about it, but once it was a constant battle. Darek was one of the ones who found my taste rather… Amusing. Which during some occasions pissed me off more than anything.

Leilani’s Point of View
I did not care about what he had told me, that he was leaving when I fell asleep. I wanted him by my side, forever! I wanted to hold him in my arms and never let go of him and as I neared him, I could hear his voice say my name and it gave me even more joy. ”Leilani." I felt him spin me around, saw the flicker of our cloaks dancing around us before he placed me back on the ground. He wore a matching style clothing, the same colored emerald and the golden trim. The cloak was different, it was brown instead of green like my own, but I was okay with that. ”I'm sorry I have not come sooner, as you know I have been with your sister, and then running a few errands, some personal. Others for the riders. And it is good to see you to ma kometama imora." My eyes brightened at the sound of the name he called me and I closed my eyes. I wanted to tell him how much I had missed him when I woke this morning, how I wish he had not left my chambers, but doing so would anger my brother and I did not want to upset him.

The sound of horse’s hooves caught my ear and I turned, my body moving gracefully in the emerald dress and cloak that had been so graciously given to me by Darek. I felt Darek’s hand upon my back as I turned and looked over at him with eyes full of love and admiration. My Darek was with me again, I felt so much better now that he was with him. As Genji sat on his horse, I saw what looked to be some form of Jealousy, but I was not very sure as he was much too far away. Taeli came up to me, her lips came to my ear and I turned my head and eyes to look at her. ”You gave him quite a little show, little one…”[/color] A small chuckle also escaped her lips and I smiled at her for a moment. I had not meant to give any show but the thought of pleasure was there. I had my Darek and I did not care who saw… Well, maybe I did, but my brother was fine with it. He liked Darek, they had sparred and they enjoyed each other company. I looked at Darek as Genji came forward and I wanted so much to see Darek in his true form, but he would probably never show himself to anyone except for a few people.

”Lord Turin, Lady Leilani.” I turned my head back towards Genji and gave a small nod like gesture towards him. As he bowed towards Taeli, she leaned over towards him and whispered to me again. ”He is a handsome one, I will give him that, but a bit too formal in my opinion.”[/color] I did not turn to respond to her, merely nodded. ”A pleasure to meet you both, I am sure. I am Count Genji Lantieri of Teirm and these charming ladies behind me are my guards Ishinomori Rikuto and Fukakawa Mami.”

Taeli stepped forward, her voice held an exotic like texture to it and her cat like amber eyes shown brightly. ”What a pleasure to meet you, Genji… I am Taeli Shealaes… Guardian of the Peacekeeper of the Land.”[/color] She said and I smiled at her words as she bowed before the man, a smile coming to her face to show off the slightly large K-9s that she had before turning back towards me and smiling. ”And this is Darek Von Cleft, Count Genji…”[/color] I said, placing my hand on his own arm gracefully and looking up at him. ”He works in Illrea with my Sister, Awiti and the Riders of the Land.”[/color] I did not say anything else, but no matter what I did, I could not hide how much I cared for Darek in my eyes, for they spoke volumes.

”I apologize for interrupting what is obviously a… Joyous reunion. I was simply wondering when milady would like to begin her lessons today. Or was I incorrect in recalling when milady promised to begin?” I returned my eyes to the Count and gave a smile, for a was much happier then I normally was to see him today and nodded. ”We can begin this morning… Why not over here under the large oak… It is such a beautiful day, I do not wish to waste it inside when I could soak up the beautiful rays of sun.”[/color] I said to him, motioning towards a rather large oak beside a small fish pond with two benches beside the tree. It was perfect to begin lessons under and I just felt too happy to go into a dim lite castle.

Darek could see the strain of running a military in Turins eyes, but that’s were it ended. He could tell Turin had been very busy trying to fill the hole that was left. But from what he could see he had been doing a very good job at that. “It is always good to hear that the future is well. Defiantly one that will hopefully be as bright as the Hunter’s moon.” Darek said for in most elves eyes the presence of the moon and what it represented only made each day more beautiful then the one before. Without the moon, the day would become something taken for granted, but with it each new day was a blessing to all elves.

As Turin saw the blade and took it into his hands Darek could not help but be pleased with the happiness that the blade brought Turin. What surprised Darek though was the fact that the blade not only seemed to give of a faint glow in Turins hands, but actually did. Darek was not sure if it was the aura Turin seemed to have around him being amplified by the blade, or the blade joining with him, but as Turin took of his old sword and replaced it with the one Darek had gotten for him he knew greatness would follow on the pairs actions. “There is no need for thanks Turin, I have spent my riches on many things, but none as deserving as a friend.” Darek said remembering his collection of Dragons he had once had carved out of gems that he had given to another friend of his.

As the talk came to more serious things Darek listened to what Turin had to say and was relieved as well as nervous at the same time. It seemed the young princess was the object of attention from many different parties. “The riders have already taken military leaders from both sides. Illirea is already wondering about what this marriage could bring if it goes through. Though being a direct force for the Brodding empire is unlikely their infighting could travel here and your empire could be brought into their politics. It makes some of the riders nervous because even if they do not help they also have to think about the other army. My own people are waiting for a spark, one in particular is waiting to get back at the Brodding empire for a wrong that was done to his daughter I hear from my parents.” Darek said not as a threat but explaining the other side of the coin. “ I do not tell you this to worry or scare anyone, I do so to make sure war is avoided. As the riders and your sister I am a messenger of peace, but will go to war to defend what I love. As I’m sure you know that would put me between two armies if it were to come. And as much as it would pain me I would fight for you and not against you Turin.” Darek said making his place in any war clear. “But also know that this time the riders would also completely take over to make sure nothing like it happened again. Unlike the elves, dragons see everyone as inferior, war only proves them right.” Darek said solemly. When Turin was done replying Darek nodded and waited for the two siblings to return.

To Taeli

Darek let a laugh go across their bond as he heard her speak, “The riders will hear about this and tell stories about it for years.” Darek laughed at her knowing she would be aghast at the fact the riders knowing that she wore a dress. Then they continued on to much calmer things until they were both face to face.

To Leilani

Darek heard the sound of the horses coming before most but thought nothing of it. After all he was a well known close friend to Turin and the teacher of Awiti in Illirea. Not only that but he was one of the rare few that were cursed more then in one way. As Leilani turned Darek kept his hand on her back as he turned with her. What he saw was the count of Teirm in not to happy of a mood either he noticed. As the count approached Darek turned once again to the sound of a cough announcing himself like no one had seen him or heard him coming. When his speech was over and Taeli was done Darek added “I have heard much about the count of Teirm, I hope the honor I hear so much spoken of is true.” Darek said as he greeted the count. Then to the two guards he said, “A pleasure to meet you ladies, it is good to see that some humans see how well a woman can be as a solider, no offense to you Turin. But your uncle still has not learned from the war with us that women are just as good soldiers as men.”

As Leilani took charge of her end of the situation Darek looked to his friend and said with a smile. “Shall we once again dance my friend? Or shall we let them have all the fun?” Darek said with a smile as he drew his sword. The turning to the ladies he added “You are welcome to join if you so choose. Two on two perhaps, or everyone for themselves it is all the same to me. Darek said as he pulled out his duel scimitars from their sheath and spoke the words to dull the edges of his blades so they would not cut skin but only leave bruises. Once he was done He began a twirling motion making sure the sun was not bothering his speed much. When he was sure that it was not he stopped them from spinning in a dance he had learned from those who livid in the sands. “ So what shall it be? Are we going to make the old man beg?” Darek laughed for to most humans he did look like an old man. Because of the curse of the vampire as well as his birth right he constantly looked older then what he really was unless he was in his true form. The only thing that never changed were his long braids that now only held two ribbons but was clearly seen that once held a third. Darek was going to test the lord Genji in more ways then one today. Genji examined the exotic woman calling herself Taeli Shealaes very closely. She was…very different, even more so than the elf. Her eyes were like the tora of Itasus – the large, striped beasts that prowled the slopes of Sariatus. And her teeth were sharp like a predator’s. Had she modified herself, as Genji had heard that elves sometimes did? But if she was elf, would not her ears still carry the characteristic pointed tip like Darek’s? After all, what elves would willingly make themselves appear so…human? No, she was probably something else. If he was still curious, he would just ask later. As for Darek himself…well, at least he knew the wisdom of training women as well as men in the art of warfare. Women such as Mami and Rikuto were as exceptional as the men they fought beside or against. And of course Nayeli had proven to be a capable woman as well, with her particular knack for knife-throwing. But he would never admit to Darek’s wisdom – not aloud, at least. And what the man thought of Genji’s honor – or the honor of meeting Genji; the count wasn’t entirely certain – was hardly worth noting. Many things were said of the Count of Teirm, after all.

He shifted his attention back to Leilani and inclined his head to her. He hadn’t intended for her lessons to be held in the castle or its courtyard, but it would be easier to be amenable with her rather than argue for returning to his estate on the castle grounds. He wanted to be agreeable, not belligerent – tempting as the second option most assuredly was. “A splendid idea, Leilani,” he said, his lips quirking in a small but genuine smile. She was not casting off her part of the bargain and that was really all he could ask for. Wasn’t it? Genji turned towards the large oak tree when Darek spoke again.

“You are welcome to join if you so choose. Two on two perhaps, or everyone for themselves it is all the same to me.” Genji watched as Darek pulled out a pair of scimitars from their sheaths and spoke what the count vaguely recognized as the speech used by the elves – the Ancient Language. With a blank expression and utterly relaxed posture – though he truly had to force himself to relax – Genji watched as Darek spun his blades about. An interesting enough technique, though Genji could hardly see the point of it. Perhaps the elf wished to ensure the light bouncing off the blade would not be too distracting. The count resisted the urge to roll his eyes, keeping his expression completely neutral. “So what shall it be? Are we going to make the old man beg?” Genji turned back to look at his guards. Though the rest of the group would not be able to tell, Genji could see the disgust all but etched in Mami’s face at the elf’s display. Rikuto would, of course, be somewhat easier to read though he doubted they would see the disgust buried beneath her mild-seeming curiosity. Both women had their hands resting lightly on their weapons of choice – Mami’s favored bullwhips and Rikuto’s sanjiegun, which was currently holstered at Rikuto’s right hip. They locked eyes with Genji, Rikuto raising an eyebrow ever so slightly. It was Mami, however, who voiced the question. “Does he honestly think that we would spar with him after that disrespectful display, Kazan-sama?”

Genji shrugged and turned back to Darek. He bowed as deeply as he had the first time before straightening up. His face and stance betrayed nothing of his thoughts as he said, “I am afraid my guards and I are in perfect agreement, Lord Darek. We respectfully decline your offer. Aside from the fact that swords do not match well against staffs or whips in battle – though I am certain your speed would more than compensate for that – this is perhaps not the best time to engage in such a spar. I do have a prior commitment with Leilani, after all.” Genji turned back to Leilani and gestured towards the tree. “Shall we?”

Turin’s Point of View
Anyone could see the stress from running the military, it was very apparent even if I tried to hide it. The stress of also keeping my youngest sister happy and worrying about having to take my part and stand to become King too early was very much there as well. Nayeli was getting to become too much like her uncle, only without the paranoia. She wanted another war, even though it would be much more planned and better prepared, it was suicide for many if not all the military and if such a thing happen, I would have to step in and announce to her that I had not declined my role as Heir to the throne. ”It is always good to hear that the future is well. Defiantly one that will hopefully be as bright as the Hunter’s moon.” I smiled at the elf and nodded in agreement before taking the blade from him.

It was an amazing blade and seemed to fit in my hands perfectly. As I held it, the blade seemed to glow in the sunlight, but then again, that could easily be the sun reflecting off the steel that it was made from. It was wonderful and I could not deny it. I took in a deep breath as I replaced the old with the new and smiled as it fit perfectly where it needed to be placed. ”There is no need for thanks Turin, I have spent my riches on many things, but none as deserving as a friend.” I allowed another smile to come to my lips and I nodded my head. I had riches as well, but I did not spend much of it. As I did not want my sister to know I was using my riches for anything, having things made for me on “I Owe You” or by good friends, it was much better and my sister would not wonder why he was doing it.

As the conversation turned to my sister and her pending engagement, I allowed myself to quit thinking about other thing and focus on the subject. ”The riders have already taken military leaders from both sides. Illirea is already wondering about what this marriage could bring if it goes through. Though being a direct force for the Brodding empire is unlikely their infighting could travel here and your empire could be brought into their politics. It makes some of the riders nervous because even if they do not help they also have to think about the other army. My own people are waiting for a spark, one in particular is waiting to get back at the Brodding empire for a wrong that was done to his daughter I hear from my parents.” The idea of it all was something Leilani also worried about and it had taken Genji words to ease the worry, but I could personally tell that it was still there no matter what. She had not taken all his words as true and she still worried about the state of both the Kingdom and the Peace. ”I do not tell you this to worry or scare anyone, I do so to make sure war is avoided. As the riders and your sister I am a messenger of peace, but will go to war to defend what I love. As I’m sure you know that would put me between two armies if it were to come. And as much as it would pain me I would fight for you and not against you Turin.” Though I knew it meant going against his own people and the place he grew up, such a word made him happy. ”But also know that this time the riders would also completely take over to make sure nothing like it happened again. Unlike the elves, dragons see everyone as inferior, war only proves them right.” I nodded in agreement for a moment and looked around before went to get my sister. I did not answer anything he said, I merely thought about it. We could both talk about it later.

Taeli’s Point of View
The sound of laughter in my own mind caused me to smile as I walked behind my ward and her brother. ”The riders will hear about this and tell stories about it for years.” I mentally let out a snarl of anger and took the challenge as something to make sure did not happen. ”You do that and I promise you cruelty until the end of my days.”

[/color] I did not like the idea of the riders knowing and Darek knew this and he chose to bug me with the idea. I tried to ignore it, but I could not. He would DIE if he dare to tell the riders and he knew my thought waves.

As we made it to the court yard and the Count finally arrived to break up my Ward’s reunion with her love, I saw that he noticed my difference and I could not help but smile at the rather handsome foreigner. I allowed my eyes to blaze with amusement at his slight confusion as to what I was and as I stepped back to be behind Leilani, I smiled at her and she knew that I was having much fun with this. I was, this had to be the most fun I had had in a very long time and she knew it. However, unlike the smaller Were Cats that were in this land, when I transformed into my human self, all looks of the cat were taken away except for my eyes and teeth.

Leilani’s Point of View
As I thought about it, I knew Darek must of heard the sound of the horses coming to the main gate and the court yard. It would not have been a hard thing to hear, but he was an elf… But I did not care, I did not want him to let me go or leave me again. I wanted him to stay and I wanted to go with him away from this city and to Illrea where I felt I belonged so much more than here. As I turned to the horses, I felt Darek’s own hand upon the small of my back and it rested their comfortable and easily. I did not flinch or blush at the feeling because those days were gone. After I had introduced Darek, he stepped forward slightly and spoke. ”I have heard much about the count of Teirm, I hope the honor I hear so much spoken of is true.” I did not speak about this Honor my love spoke about. ”A pleasure to meet you ladies, it is good to see that some humans see how well a woman can be as a solider, no offense to you Turin. But your uncle still has not learned from the war with us that women are just as good soldiers as men.” I looked at my brother who nodded in agreement. ”Well, as most of us know, my uncle is not the smartest type of man, nor is he very mentally stable.”[/color] I smiled at my brother at his words.

As I spoke with Genji about maybe sitting over by the Oak to do our studies I did see a hint of something else he might of wanted to say. ”A splendid idea, Leilani.” The sound of his voice and smile on his lips, even just a but was small and I nodded. ”Did you have another idea for where my lessons would begin, Count Genji?”[/color] I asked him in a very gentle voice. I did I fact want to know if he had had other plans and then turned to see Genji and my brother exchange the challenge.

”Shall we once again dance my friend? Or shall we let them have all the fun?” My brother smiled at Darek for a moment and thought about it for a moment. ”A good spar would be nice… I think I can spare a moment of enjoy a nice match with you…”[/color] He said, his eyes also turning to the ladies of Genji. ”You are welcome to join if you so choose. Two on two perhaps, or everyone for themselves it is all the same to me.” I smiled at my Darek and watched as he put his wards on the blades and spun them around for a moment. I knew the reason why and as he stopped, I put my hand on his arm and smiled at him.

”So what shall it be? Are we going to make the old man beg?” I chuckled slightly at my Darek and patted his arm. ”You are not Old, Darek… Why would you say that?”[/color] I asked, a softness in my voice that I never used with anyone else and a spark in my eye that was very much there when I looked into my Darek’s face. I felt my finger touching the small ribbon on my finger that he had given me so long ago and I looked at Genji to see what he would say or do. I noticed that the ladies were a bit… Tense, but I tried not to linger over them. The sound of the words from the ladies made my smile ago away and then I turned to looked at Genji as he faced me. ”I am afraid my guards and I are in perfect agreement, Lord Darek. We respectfully decline your offer. I did not answer for any of my servants or guards, they could speak for themselves and I would only speak for them when I felt it was needed. ”Shall we?” I glanced at Taeli who smiled at me and shrugged for a moment. I then looked at Darek.

”Why don’t you and Turin go and spar my dear… You can come back when you two have declared a winner and we can enjoy some time together.”[/color] I said to him, a smile on my face as I looked at him.

Darek watched the two females expressions, trying to read what they thought of the idea. The one Genji called Mami seemed emotionless as she held onto her bullwhip. It was odd seeing a human wielding such a weapon out in the open. They were mostly used by slave trainers because the wielder could stand far enough away so that the slaves could not grab the person. In warfare it was hardly a weapon for the fact that a well made elven sword could cut through almost any whip made. Even elves rarely put their hands to the whip and thus mastering it because with their speed it did nothing for you, and those who did had made their own kind of whips that could slash a mans arm of as easily as any sword. It was the second that caught Darek's attention though, Rikuto he believed her name was. He saw interest in her eyes about the idea, and even though she had some sort of staff, he knew it would be much more of a challenge then the whip.

As Darek was watching her he heard Mami speak to Genji.Though he did not know what it meant he was curious to know. " You see during my life I traveled with a tribal people and they taught me much about their culture. Including some of their ways of fighting. A warrior never passes up the chance to learn something new, for he never knows when it will save his life. If you do not know how to fish and you are in the middle of the ocean how do you eat? Would it not seem foolish to pass down the chance to learn to fish so that you would never go hungry. Is it not the same?" Darek asked only to hear Genji fall right into his trap. " So are you saying Lord Genji that you do not trust in your guards capabilities, or that you do not think that an elf is worth their time? Or maybe that they themselves don't have a choice, only your will." Then turning to his love he added " I call myself old because I am just about the oldest person in this whole empire. Nothing more, you know my age as does another. I'm sure you would both agree." Darek said hinting that her friend was the only one who came close if not surpassed his age.

With a smile and a nod Darek Bowed and took Leilanis hand into his own, kissing it. " Until next time ma komitama imora." Darek said as he followed Turin to the place in which they would spar. Mentally he asked his old friend to let him know if anything went wrong. After he was sure the message had been received he payed all of his attention to the young prince. " So this may take a while. After all your sister said until one of us declare a winner. And if I'm not mistaken neither one of us will give up until we are to tired to continue." he said with a smile enjoying the company of Turin. " I just noticed something where is Sean. It worries me that she has no guards yet he has two, if he were to kidnap her their would be nothing to stop him." Darek said letting his concern be heard.

Genji shrugged at Leilani’s statement. He would be able to explain it all as time went on. So he started over towards the tree Leilani had selected. It was a rather lovely day out, so he did not begrudge her desire to study outside. “I am certain that they will find my attempts to educate amusing and will offer insight where they feel necessary,” he said before freezing on the spot. His guards, who were close behind, froze as well at Darek’s words.

“So are you saying Lord Genji that you do not trust in your guards’ capabilities or that you do not think that an elf is worth their time? Or maybe that they themselves don't have a choice, only your will?”

As one, the Itasans turned around as Darek started walking away to begin sparring with Turin. The expressions on their faces were difficult to read, but the anger and tension in their stances was obvious. Genji was about to speak when Rikuto of all people cut him off and strode over to Darek. Genji simply stared after her, a multitude of questions and emotions flickering in his eyes, though his face remained neutral.

It was, perhaps, fortunate that it was Rikuto who heard Darek voicing his concerns about Leilani’s safety for she was the least likely to lash out at him for it. Nevertheless, her outrage forced her to straighten herself until she stood at her full six-foot-six-inch height. In her unusually deep raspy voice and with an eloquence that normally eluded her, she said, “I would ask that you mind your tongue when you speak of my lord. Do not be so quick to judge his motivations or to question our honor. We know what worthy opponents the elves are for we were in Alagaesia during the time of Palancar’s Slaughter. But just like during the war, we choose not to fight because that is not what the god Yawata no Kami wills. There is a time and place for sparring and to us, this is not it.” She turned and pointed at Genji. “Our lord knows full well that we are capable warriors for he has faced us many times on the battlefields in Itasus – and never once was he defeated by us. We are not the simpering weakling females of Alagaesia. Barring of course the Lady Leilani and her noble sister Lady Nayeli, who possess a strength that we can understand and respect.” Her eyes remained unblinking as she unconsciously drew upon her clan’s training. Her tone became colder with each word she spoke. “Itasan women are formidable and choose their own paths in life. Mami and I chose to follow our lord because he has earned our respect and loyalty time and again from the moment we met him as children at the Academy of Itasus. He lives his life with grace and strength. His actions bring great honor to Yawata no Kami and to our nation.” She jabbed her finger at Darek in chastisement. “Be mindful of this and please do not insult us with your couched accusations of treacherous intent nor speak so blithely of us or our lord in your ignorance of our culture and our heritage.” Without waiting for Darek’s reply, she turned on heel and strode back to Genji with a rarely seen fire in her eyes.

Genji continued to watch her, his expression thoughtful even as she stopped stiffly beside them and bowed deeply to Genji in apology. Mami blinked a few times, shook her head and chuckled. “You never cease to amaze me, little boulder.” Genji did not speak. Instead, he placed a gentle hand on her arm and met her cold, unblinking gaze with serene eyes and a small, warm smile. She simply nodded and turned towards the tree, stalking over to it with her head held high and Mami trailing after her.

Sometimes you did not know what sort of ally you possessed until they became a giant flailing squid of anger on your behalf. He had forgotten the ferocity with which his guards – his friends – had defended him in childhood. But he could not allow such maudlin feelings to interfere with his plans. He glanced at Leilani and then followed his guards over to the tree. He sat down on one of the benches and waited for her to join them.

I looked between everyone and I felt Taeli’s hand on my shoulder before a mental link came to my own by the were tiger. ”My Ward, you must move back, I have a bad feeling this may end very bad and I do not want you in the middle. The last thing I need are the riders breathing down my neck constantly if you get hurt in your own court yard.” I looked at her and nodded before Genji looked at me slightly as he shrugged. I did not quite understand why any woman would want to hang around the man, he seemed kind of controlling, which was another reason I refused to marry him. Darek was so loving, so wonderful and that is why I loved him so much. ”I am certain that they will find my attempts to educate amusing and will offer insight where they feel necessary.” I guess it was a good reason, but then Darek decided to speak.

And if I'm not mistaken neither one of us will give up until we are too tired to continue." I watched as my brother chuckled at him and patted him on the back. ”It may take weeks then in order to declare a winner my friend…”

I turned back to Genji and walked over to him, moving towards the tree and looking at Taeli who gave me a wicked smile before looking at Darek. ”I suggest you go Elfy boy… I think it is time for her to start her lesson.”[/color] The link was open to me and I smiled at my best friend and sat down on another bench. I looked at Genji and smiled at him, waiting for him to begin the lessons.

Darek heard the footsteps coming and was had turned around to meet the person who had followed him and Turin. As the woman let out a tirade of words Darek just stood there listening and waiting for her to finish. When she was done he got ready to speak only to have her turn her back on him and keep walking. Slowly he bent over and found a small round pebble, something that would make the distance, but would not hurt anything including a fly. But just as he was about to throw it he saw Leilani break away from his old friend and speak to him. Slowly he dropped the pebble he was going to toss to the ground and added before leaving. " Those who can not listen as well as speak should not speak at all, because a civil person who has any wisdom knows that by storming off like a little child after a tantrum accomplish nothing. " Then turning to Leilani he said in a much kinder tone. " I am sorry you had to hear that, but as a diplomat you understand the meaning I am sure. You know what to do if you need me." and with that Darek turned to go with Turin and apologized to him for having to deal with such things. " Shall we go, a week is a long time and I'm afraid your sisters wont allow you to have me that long." Darek said with a smile as he continued walking. This time though he kept his hands on his blades, if he had learned anything from the last outburst he had found their weakness.

Genji raised a slender eyebrow at the words that were called out to Rikuto as she stormed away from Darek. Had the elf not done the exact same thing when he had questioned Genji’s actions prior to walking away with Turin? That seemed like something of a double standard to the count, but Genji knew little about the elves beyond their fighting techniques – which were many, varied, always new, and interesting – and their interest in the aesthetics in life. Nothing else seemed particularly important, but perhaps it was time to start delving further into the culture of humanity’s still-hated former enemies.

The count gave an imperceptible shake of his head to clear his thoughts as Leilani finally joined him by the tree. He rose gracefully and bowed, waiting until Leilani had seated herself before reseating himself. Now came the beginning of the moment of truth. How he proceeded from here on out would have far reaching consequences – not only for himself and Itasus, but for Broddring as well. He really could not afford to mess this up beyond all repair.

So no pressure.

He suddenly laughed aloud at himself. He shook his head. “I am sorry, Leilani. There is so much I wish to share and I honestly do not know where to begin. But I would like to apologize if my behavior or presence has caused any unnecessary tension today. Itasans are very…proud people and we consider honor to be a sacred thing. The one thing we never question is another person’s honor and integrity – not without solid evidence to back up our statements. To our minds, even hinting at the thought of questioning someone’s honor without due cause is tantamount to questioning the honor, benevolence and wisdom of Yawata no Kami.” He paused very briefly, realizing that his last statement probably did not make much sense. “I am getting ahead of myself. Perhaps I should just start at the very beginning of Itasus. On the island known to us as Itas – and from whence we get our name – there were dozens of clans roaming the island for hundreds of years. They fought with each other over food, water, and territory. Some clans made alliances. Others preferred to remain independent. But out of this chaotic life, there eventually rose to prominence five particular clans. Each had a particular area that became their sole territory and they named themselves after these areas. The Hiroisora chose the northern half of the Hida mountain range as their domain, delighting in the deep valleys with skies that both stretched into eternity and were tightly constrained by the mountaintops. As I watched my Love drop the pebble, I smiled and touched my hand to his cheek, looking into his beautiful eyes. As he did not look at me at first, he spoke to the woman, the one that served count Genji. ”Those who cannot listen as well as speak should not speak at all, because a civil person who has any wisdom knows that by storming off like a little child after a tantrum accomplish nothing." I could not help but roll my eyes at him as I knew he was trying to cause even the smallest problem in hopes that it would cause my brother to be completely against Genji, but he already was. I patted his arm as he turned towards me. ”I am sorry you had to hear that, but as a diplomat you understand the meaning I am sure. You know what to do if you need me." I smiled brightly at him as he turned towards my brother and I heard him speak. ”Shall we go, a week is a long time and I'm afraid your sisters won’t allow you to have me that long." I chuckled at the words before turning back to join Darek at the large oak. Teali looked at me and once again I felt a mental break in my wall from her. ”Do you enjoy showing everyone your affection to that Hybrid or is it just me.”

[/color] A wicked smile was on the lips to my protector before she placed a hand on my shoulder and smiled at me. I patted it gently and moved with her towards the area. She took to sitting on the ground right beside me, where as I sat on a bench slightly across from Genji.

As the sound bowed, I barely paid attention before I sat down, though Taeli was already sitting before me, something you would not really see inside the castle. Everyone waited for the Nobles to sit or the people who lived there to sit before them, but then again, Taeli did not observe the customs of the Kingdom, she merely took orders from one person or one group and that was the riders.

My eyes then landed on the Count as he shook his head. ”I am sorry, Leilani. There is so much I wish to share and I honestly do not know where to begin. But I would like to apologize if my behavior or presence has caused any unnecessary tension today.” I thought about it for a moment and then smiled. ”I saw nothing wrong with your presence today count, just a few mere problems that will work out soon, I am sure.”[/color] I said, figuring it was best not to show any form of anger towards the Count in order to keep everything rolling. I wanted the lesson to hurry so I could return to my love and enjoy my time with him. The longer I sat here with this foreigner, the longer I was apart from him. ”Itasans are very…proud people and we consider honor to be a sacred thing. The one thing we never question is another person’s honor and integrity – not without solid evidence to back up our statements. To our minds, even hinting at the thought of questioning someone’s honor without due cause is tantamount to questioning the honor, benevolence and wisdom of Yawata no Kami.” I looked at him for a moment and thought about that. Honor was something everyone enjoyed having and protecting, but I believed that if you had honor, if someone questioned it, it did not matter… It was how you felt about it, not what others thought.

”I am getting ahead of myself. Perhaps I should just start at the very beginning of Itasus. On the island known to us as Itas – and from whence we get our name – there were dozens of clans roaming the island for hundreds of years. They fought with each other over food, water, and territory. Some clans made alliances.” I nodded to him as he began. ”Well, Alliances are good ways to seal a good victory or hold onto a secure protection of something.”[/color] She said in response to his first words about the place from where he came. ”Others preferred to remain independent. But out of this chaotic life, there eventually rose to prominence five particular clans. Each had a particular area that became their sole territory and they named themselves after these areas. She did look at the Count, her cat eyes focused on him hard as she smiled. ”You speak of a Yawaya no Kami? I am sure Lady Leilani would enjoy hearing about this God you speak so much of.”[/color] I looked at my exotic friend, whom held a smile on her face as she looked at me, showing her cat like teeth before looking back at him. I did not care much about Gods, I never did… I had learned so much about the Elves that I had adopted their own thoughts on Deities.

“You speak of a Yawata no Kami? I am sure Lady Leilani would enjoy hearing about this God you speak so much of.”

Genji turned his gaze from Leilani to her friend – what was her name? Talon? Tetheri? No…Taeli? He was fairly certain that was her name. He should probably try to commit it to memory, lest he embarrass himself by addressing her as something other than her name.

What had she said? Something about Yawata no Kami? He frowned ever so slightly. She had rather butchered the pronunciation of the name, but she was not a speaker of Itasu so that was to be expected.

His experience with Alagaesians and religion was that Alagaesians had little to no interest in hearing about another religion. They were quite content with Nyx or local deities or the Dwarven gods or no gods at all. It was lamentable, but all peoples of the earth were granted the right to choose. Yawata no Kami surely wept for those who would not see the light, but it was their choice. Genji would simply have to be as clear and honest about Yawata no Kami as was humanly possible. He prayed that Benzaiten would let the words flow cleanly from his mouth so that Leilani and Taeli would understand the depth of his devotion and the greatness of the gods.

A sense of profound joy filled him and he knew that Benzaiten had heard his prayers. He smiled, a look of pure serenity brightening his expression. “Yawata no Kami is one of four deities on Itasus and is our primary deity. I suppose you could almost liken Him to Broddring’s Nyx in that regard, though how we approach our worship of Yawata no Kami varies drastically from how most citizens of Broddring worship Nyx. We think of Yawata no Kami as our Protector, attempting to guide us down a path that will ultimately lead each person to eternal peace in Yawata no Kami’s presence. But Yawata no Kami is but half of a balance. There is also Zhayu the Executioner, who is Yawata no Kami’s opposite. Where Yawata no Kami is positive energy and serenity, Zhayu is negative energy and unbridled passion. We do not really believe that either of these gods possesses a gender, like humans or elves or other mortal species. Our priests and priestesses – indeed any who are particularly in tune with their spiritual nature – all agree that Yawata no Kami takes the form of a silver dragon and Zhayu takes the form of a golden dragon, each one possessing the characteristics of both genders and neither. But because it can be difficult to wrap one’s mind around this idea, our ancestors arbitrarily assigned a gender to these two. Yawata no Kami was designated male because traditionally men were given the task of protecting the home and family while female was given to Zhayu simply for the purposes of maintaining a balance when speaking of them. We place greater importance upon worshiping Yawata no Kami because His serenity and emotional restraint occupies Zhayu’s disorder and passion. But we understand that serenity and emotional restraint are dangerous when not balanced by passion and disorder. The opposite is also true. Mortals are beings of passion – a lesson we learned the hard way in years past. Thus, every Itasan strives to live every day in a manner that will be in line with this balance so that we are worthy of resting in Their presence upon our deaths.”

His smile slowly widened as his gaze was drawn skyward. A hand strayed to his left shoulder, gently stroking the still-vibrant red tattoo there – Genji’s own constant reminder of what emotional restraint and faith in Yawata no Kami could accomplish. “I thank Zhayu for the passion and emotion She gave me early in my life – without it, I would not be human. But I am indebted to Yawata no Kami for teaching me how to use those gifts properly. Without His grace, I would have destroyed myself a long time ago and I am forever grateful that He has seen fit to bless me with the life I have.” He fell silent for a moment before shaking his head slightly as if to clear it and looking back at Leilani. “Of course, there are also Benzaiten and Fukurokuju, who aid mortals in understanding Yawata no Kami and Zhayu. We call Benzaiten the goddess of life and all things that flow – words, water, music, knowledge, and so on. She ferries souls from the spirit world into this world that they may learn from their experiences here and enrich their existence. While we live on earth, it is Her duty to try and guide us down the path of enlightenment so that we become worthy of existing in the presence of Yawata no Kami and Zhayu. She is also responsible for helping mortals see and appreciate the beauty of the world and to inspire us in our praises to the deities. This She does every day of a person’s life. The last of our deities, though no less important than the first three, is Fukurokuju. He is the god of death and guardian of all of the world’s knowledge. Benzaiten makes this knowledge easier for us to understand, but it is only by Fukurokuju’s permission that it is accessible to us at all. This is because he, too, has been given the task of ensuring that our existences have been enriched by understanding and are therefore worthy of entering the presence of Yawata no Kami and Zhayu upon our deaths. It is his duty to judge a soul once the person has died. If a soul is worthy, Fukurokuju ushers them into the presence of Yawata no Kami and Zhayu. If a soul is not worthy, it is reincarnated until it is worthy. Thus, all the deities play an important role in our lives from birth to death. Every household, no matter how wealthy or poor, possesses some sort of shrine that is dedicated to Them. Prayers are offered to the deities every morning at the shrine for the strength to go through the day walking upon the path They are laying out with us.”

Genji paused again. There was so much more to it than that, but how could he explain it? “I said earlier that Itasans are very proud people and that honor is sacred to us. In our minds, our honor is tied to the honor of our deities. That probably seems juvenile and senseless, but we are taught from childhood that honoring Yawata no Kami, who is the very embodiment of law and order, is the most important deed a person can do. And in honoring each other, we honor Yawata no Kami. That is all we strive for in our lives. We like to think that in general we succeed at this, though of course it is only for the deities to determine the truth of that.” He looked down at the ground with a slight frown, thinking. After a moment, he said, “Even though the clans all have their differences, we still honor and respect one another as admirable opponents and fellow countrymen. It rarely occurs to us to question our opponents’ honor because in essence they are striving to lead a life that honors Yawata no Kami as much as we do. It is only when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary that we seek to accuse or punish. I know that this is not how all nations and peoples behave or believe, but I also know that it is difficult to act in a manner that runs counter to one’s upbringing.” He glanced up at Leilani. The curtain of his hair somewhat obscured his expression, but his eyes were still visible. There was something like sympathy in his gaze rather than his usual disdain. “You seek to follow your own path because that is how you were raised to live. I seek to construct my path as I go, with the aid – and hopefully the blessing – of my deities. That is just who we are, is it not?”

Taeli knew how to make me dislike my lessons from the short time we had gotten to know each other and it was something that I had learned about her… She enjoyed making others as uncomfortable as possible and it was rather annoying sometimes, but the riders wanted me protected and a few did not want me married as they felt it would make things much more difficult to keep peace when I was one of the main peace keeps among the humans. It was a tough task, but my sister would know exactly how to screw it up and that was putting me into a marriage I would completely hate.

As I waited for him to speak about his religious deity I took in a deep breath and prepared myself for another long sermon on the subject of his culture. The fact that it was religion really already bored me. Like the elves, I found no use in religion that most the time let you down. The one that some of my own countrymen followed, the Deity known as Nyx… It was nothing more than something I refused to even acknowledge. I enjoyed leaving a life of freedom, like that of the elves that many associated me with because of some of my features.

I noticed a smile come to the face of the man who had been speaking before and Taeli glanced over at me. I merely looked at her for a moment, wanting so badly to be called away for anything other than listen to this man talk about religion that I cared nothing about. ”You need to learn, my ward… It is better to know than not to know.”

It all sounded about the same to any other religion I had learned about. People wanted to please their Gods, do things that their gods would want them to do and it was just the same in everyplace. If it was not God, it was a King or Queen, or a person. It was useless…

He looked to the sky and I glanced up for a moment and then watched him take his hand to his left shoulder and move it over the fabric of his clothing and probably on the area that I remember seeing the tattoo on his skin. ”I thank Zhayu for the passion and emotion She gave me early in my life – without it, I would not be human. Genji merely chuckled as Leilani contradicted his statement about her upbringing. “Forgive me if I seem a bit condescending, but from what I know of your upbringing, Leilani, you were trained in diplomacy from a very young. And you have taken to it like a fish to water. What you do is admirable and your attempts to bring reconciliation between the humans, elves, and Riders have been instrumental in maintaining the tenuous peace we hold now. For one who is still rather young, by anyone’s standards, you have achieved much and have the potential to achieve even more. But does not a diplomat need to be flexible and free in their thinking, so that they may better understand the people they interact with – people who come from vastly different lifestyles and cultures? Does not that sort of flexibility often promote independent thinking? And is it not an independent mind that desires to follow its own path, counter to what society demands of it?”

He began wringing his hands, wondering if he should continue. “Our upbringing often influences us in more ways than we realize or perhaps care to admit.” His words were hesitant at first, but slowly smoothed out as he continued. After all, there was no going back. He had to give his all and pray that Yawata no Kami and Benzaiten would ensure he did not sound like an absolute arrogant ass. “My upbringing turned me into a perfectionist and a demanding one, at that. That drive to perfect myself and perfect the way I handle my duties is part of why Teirm has recovered so well from the war, why its soldiers are some of the best in Broddring, and why Itasus is content with just trading with Alagaesia. But I am by no means perfect and I understand that no one is. And it has taken much work – and the continued patience of my friends and advisors – for me to even reach that point. It is why I sometimes find it difficult to accept your refusal to wed. On an intellectual level, I understand it. But on a cultural…and perhaps even emotional level, I am having a much harder time understanding. It’s almost painful, in a way, to know that I may never be able to capture your heart.” He sat up straight and smiled sadly at her, his hands finally falling still. “I am glad that you are perhaps finding at least some of this enlightening, though I suspect that your mind is somewhere else entirely at the moment.”

Now, my refusal to wed you comes on more terms then just one… Mostly from my past of seeing my mother faithfulness thrown down the trash by my father, another by the fact that it is forced as if I am nothing more than property and something my sister can use, and the last because I know I have someone I care about and know I want to spend the rest of my life with and be a family with… My mother was forced into an abusive marriage by her own brother who knew my father abused her… Who allowed it and threatened her and told her if she ran away she would be found and murdered… My sister expects me to be forced into something I do not want, does not ask my opinion or if I am ready to marry anyone, much less someone I do not know… And I have loved someone and want to spend every moment with him and if I married you it would be unfair to you as my husband to not want to be with you, to not love you, and to not want you to touch me in a way that a husband would when I want someone else to do so.”[/color] I said to him. I had my reasons and I did not plan on changing them at all.

”I am glad that you are perhaps finding at least some of this enlightening, though I suspect that your mind is somewhere else entirely at the moment.” I looked at him for a moment and then nodded. ”I regret to say I am slightly… I did listen, that much you do not have to worry about, but when it came to your religion I was not very… Oh, what is the word… Well, I guess you could say in simple terms, Interested… Religion just is not something I care for… I prefer the Elven approach on such things which is there is nothing out there but life on earth and that we should live without having to please any Gods or Goddesses…”[/color] I said to him, looking at Taeli who just gave me a smile as she set there. She never liked sitting in her human body, but she refused to change in front of him, she would wait until she was in my room and in her normal clothing.

The few other Alagaesians Genji had discussed religion with – mostly the old nobles that were now thankfully dead – had completely dismissed his beliefs as baseless, paganistic, and ignorant. But what good had their own goddess done them? Frankly, he was just grateful that she had at least been considerate enough to not ridicule him, despite her obvious disinterest. Things really were going more smoothly than he had hoped, though the presence of this…Darek complicated things immensely. She was quite obviously smitten with him and her mind just as clearly was on the elf-thing. Genji wondered if it would even be possible to draw her heart away from him, she was so deeply enamored with the creature. “I have heard a bit about the elven philosophy. It is part of why they are vegetarians, correct? Life is sacred to them because all life feels and possesses some intelligence and this is the only life any being lives?” He mused on that for a moment. “I always considered it a hard way to live. I am too attached to those I love to think that I will never see them again once they are dead. I find the very thought of it unbearable. Perhaps it is different to those whose lives are measured in centuries rather than decades. But even then, I cannot understand how they arrived at the conclusion that this is the only life one possesses.”

But she did have a point about this marriage. It was not something either of them necessarily wanted. He certainly held no love for this girl and would probably only ever tolerate her at best. She was not the only one in this mess who desired someone else. The difference was that she was young and in a position to follow that desire. He was not quite so young anymore and he had never been in a position to follow his own feelings. “As for the influence your mother’s situation holds over your own decisions…I cannot say that it is unreasonable to feel as you do. I know that I certainly felt no desire to answer my own sire’s demands when they were initially placed upon me – not after everything he forced my mother to suffer through.” His fists clenched at the memories of his mother’s mistreatment: the tales of his father’s disgraceful actions and his mother’s submission; the way every eye glared at her as if she were some piece of filth, the insults not-so-subtly spoken in her presence; the way his brothers, grandfathers, aunts and uncles – her own family – would sometimes speak ill of her, though never near her or to her face. Not a single one of them was worthy of walking this earth with her, the vicious bunch jackals. “No zaiti insaeng-ui no honou deserves what she endured – not when her whole life was devoted to doing what was best for her family and her people.” He snapped his jaw shut and ground his teeth together. Too much…he was revealing way too much and it was far too personal. He took a deep breath and held it for a moment before letting it out slowly. He needed to calm down. He needed to not think of that time and that suffering. Things had long since changed for the better.

(OOC: Zaiti insaeng-ui no honou roughly translates to "carrier of life's flame" - an honorific title the Kazan clan confer upon every woman belonging to the clan, though it sometimes is used to refer to any woman. Also, sorry it's taken so long. I just had no muse for Genji whatsoever. I hope it was worth the wait. -_-)

I had no problem discussing Religion, but I just never cared to follow it. I, though not elven, had been following the elven lifestyle for a while, minus the vegetarian ways as it was just not a good idea when most of my protein came meat and until I knew what all to eat to keep myself healthy, it was best not to change my diet completely, though I had taken to eating more grasses and greens. Though, on the thought of religion, she just chose not to think about it, not to really believe in it. Unlike many of my people, who were very judgmental about people not following the deity that so many followed, I was not like that at all. I did not care about religion and I was in no place to judge anyone.

Now, Darek was possible the best thing to happen in so long and I was so happy he had come and arrived in the city. His presence made me smile and my heart beat upon my chest. ”I have heard a bit about the elven philosophy. It is part of why they are vegetarians, correct? ”Well, their believe is that they do not see enough evidence in the world to show anything like a God or Goddess…”[/color] Her voice was so exotic and feline all at the same time. ”Elves have a connection with the world that no human can imagine, or only a handful can imagine… They can look into someone’s mind, they can see how they see life, even the smallest ants sees life and knows it…”[/color] She said to the count as she looked at me for a moment. ”They believe nothing is higher than Elves, Dragons, and Magic, which is, in my opinion, rather obvious… Elves have abilities that humans, kulls, were-animals, or dwarfs will never know unless they are truly blessed with such a gift… Dragons are powerful, though the dragons of the riders will never be as powerful as their counterpart, but they are still very powerful… And magic is something that is hard to top… I would be surprised if a mere human could top magic…”[/color] She said, explaining quickly the elven believe, though not going into depth too much on any subject. It might have been rather random in some places, but it was the basic knowledge of what they believed and unless someone wanted to know more, she was not going to go into depth. She was no elf, she was not human… She was Taeli, something different then both.

I looked back to the count and wonder what he thought, but it continued into the marriage topic. My sister had too much control at the moment and I really hoped my brother decided to step up.

Genji listened patiently to Taeli’s explanation of elven philosophy. He had already made clear that he understood, at least in part, how they had reached their conclusions about life. He was not an idiot. He knew how to get information and he knew how to understand and use it. But he held his tongue. If she felt the need to clarify, then let her attempt to clarify. It would do no good. He had felt the presence and power of Yawata no Kami, seen it, and lived it. He could never explain that to these unseeing foreigners.

“Well, then it seems we are on the same page… Now, you can either continue to listen to my sister’s orders or just enjoy the company and never completely act on anything and we will get along splendidly.”

Genji blinked, staring at Leilani in disbelief. Had she in fact not been listening to a word he said? His statements were not proof that she was correct. They were proof that things were not as idiotically simple as she believed. Was she really that idealistic, that naïve? He had absolutely no intention of stopping, no matter how painful it was for him to continue. He could not just throw everything away just because some brat didn’t want to do her proper duty and behave like the adult she was supposed to be. He closed his eyes and sighed heavily. “Leilani, as much as I would truly be content to just let you go on your merry way towards…whatever, I…cannot. I do not want to, nor would I ever, hurt you.” He paused, wondering how he could word his next statement. Slowly, he said, “But every action I have taken in my life has been made in an attempt to honor my mother’s sacrifice. She endured much disgrace before and after my birth, though she did her best to keep her pain from my brothers and me. She was beautiful and elegant even in the midst of her agony. And I swore when I was very young that I would not let her suffering be in vain. I cannot just…throw away everything and abandon the path that I am on…the path that she set me on. I owe her just as much as I owe my gods, and I can think of no greater insult to my mother than to selfishly indulge my flights of fantasy when I have a duty to my city and my people to make sure our alliances do not crumble nor our trade agreements falter nor let both our countries’ growth stagnate – the very things my mother allowed herself to be sexually violated for in order to prevent them from happening.” He looked Leilani straight in the eye, his expression serious, pained, and earnest. “What kind of son would I be if I allowed the destruction of everything she has worked for?”
