The question came from my mouth before I could really think about it. I knew why we were going to the Elf Forest of Du Weldenvarden, it was because the council had told us to go. Anselm Volasyl and Elisedd had both come to us during the evening and had asked us to travel to Ellesméra… The Queen of the elves was sick, could die because of a explosion that had happened. Anselm had expressed his concern about a magic that only a few people knew known as Blood Magic. It was a rarity, but a few knew it and he had told us that the elves around her said she was acting crazy. ”Don’t forget the expanding Cathedral… It has gotten into the forest just above Isenstar lake… A small village that is there.” The idea was revolting, but I just snorted slightly.”Why are we doing this?”
My golden body dove through a cloud, my head turning slightly to look at Tasia. She wore her golden armor, but it was far different then that of many. It still looked like her style of clothing, with one sleeve of thick chain mail going around her torso. She wore the same kind of skirt, all chainmail. She made it look great and she was such a good fighter, I didn’t think it would matter. She did have other armor for any major battles. I looked ahead, thinking about different things that we had done since we came together. First, we came together, she got her own sword with a beautiful golden blade which was attached to my neck by a strap. Her bow and arrows were around her back and she held on without a problem. She set on a saddle, since it was a long trip, which was fine with me and her legs were tied in. Her crown, the green vine which was as hard as the steel on her sword and the emerald gem set on her long black hair which flowed behind her.
I glanced down towards the ground, seeing the sandy desert that we were going over. The heat of the summer could be felt and as we flew further towards the desert, even if it was only a small stretch, it got hotter. ”Do you want to rest?” I glanced back at her and growled. I would face this, I was not landing for anything. She nodded towards me and looked ahead, my golden eyes searched the land before us. It would not take long and we would be on the other side of the desert and landing before the protected forest. They knew we were coming, but I did not understand why we had to stop, I wanted to get to the city and out, I did not care to stop and hold a conversation. Elves sometimes were stupid, but it did not matter, it was life and I had to try and get things done.
I did not understand why the riders wanted to help the Queen of the Elves, she was possible one of the reason that there had been a war in the first place. Why not let her die, just like the human King, he could just die too and then, new ones would take the place and it might be easier to keep things under control, but no, the Council had to help the Humans and Elves, which meant helping the Queen and also, checking out the damned Cathedral. ”When will we check on that, Tasia?” I asked, wondering mostly about the humans and there religion. She thought about it for only a moment before she answered. ”On our way back… Sunglow, head on down, there is the forest.” I looked down, seeing the edge and then diving. My wings collapsed to my side and I moved quickly downward towards the earth before spreading my wings and hitting the ground with a slightly hard thud. ”Still got to work on landing.” I said.
She jumped off, landing perfectly with a wild smile on her face… She was nothing more then a mere show off sometimes and it made my own growl come forth. I glanced around, wondering where the small elves would be. I was still not as big as the other dragons, but I was big enough to make a meal out of a few elves who wanted to get in my way. She walked towards the forest, but soon, arrows were sent towards her feet, causing her to jump back. My roar shook the forest and I lunged forward, smoke blowing from my mouth. I could not breath fire just yet, but I could feel it building inside. ”Who dares attacks a rider and dragon!” My voice held venom laced within’ the words as I looked into the forest, my eyes seeing something move before someone walked out.
"Forgive my men, they have been on edge since the explosion and the Queen becoming sick." The voice of the male that was before us held more lies then truth to that. Most elves hated dragons, Tasia was among the few. I growled, pulling my head up and baring my teeth. He was lucky it was me who had come and not someone like Nemo and her lovely dragon Ikehr had not been here, they would have all been meals for Ikehr and honestly, he would not ask for a explanation. Tasia touched my neck and she stepped forward. "We are here to check on the Queen." Her voice held authority in her own voice and I stood behind her, my eyes hard as stone, the gold shining with a hard glare at the male who just looked at her. "Yes, we know... Come, we will get you to a small clearing where you can fly the rest of the way into the forest." She nodded and looked at me...
I did not know how much I hated walking until now... My wings were crushed against my side and she walked ahead of me. I continue to glance at the elves that were around us. I could feel the ancient magic they held, it was strong, which meant they were probably older then Tasia. "They are... I know two of them." Her words caught me by surprise. Then, why did they shoot? I did not understand how others could shoot at someone who was a friend or someone they knew. She just looked at me and soon, we stood within' the clearing. She mounted me and I took off without even a glance. I went as fast as I could, trying to make up time that we had lost. "It is not much further. I just looked ahead, not even nodding or acknowledging that she was there, something was strange in the air.
Something was coming and I turned my head, trying to figure out what was going on. Tasia did not have to think about why I was worried, she felt it through me and soon, we were landing in front of the large tree where the Queen lived. One could tell that it had been through a lot and soon, elves were all around us, looking at us with both awe and hatred. I growled slightly and watched as Tasia jumped off and looked up... I heard the sound of wings and I looked up in time to see large dragons coming down towards us… Wild Dragons! Tasia held her own fear within’ her mind, but I felt it and my head stretched past her own, my tail, the dagger like spike on the end was not yet completely strong enough to do serious harm, but it was enough to protect her. I growled, my white teeth showing as I looked at them. Before me was a huge gray dragon, landing right in front of us, causing the elves to run and scream, leaving the road mostly vacant, but for myself and Tasia. ”You worthless creatures know nothing about taking care of your own." His voice rumbled towards us all, the gray dragon looked at me. He held steel gray eyes and he was huge, bigger then any I had seen in the council. ”They even turn there backs on the riders, those made into being by a pact made by your own kind young rider, unfortunately, not even your own council can fix this.” I looked at Tasia and she was amazed. She could not believe it, her voice was echoing in my own mind. ”What do you mean? Why can’t we fix it?”
She took a step forward, but even I could smell her fear without a problem and I moved slightly with her. The gray dragon looked at her for a moment and then too me. ”You two morons could not heal this woman for even the simpliest thing.” His voice was deep and it showed that he did not care much for the riders. He turned his head to the guards, their spears pointed at him, arrows pointed at him as well. ”Oh, get away from you me you worthless bags of flesh.” He snorted, bellowing smoke from his nostrils before he glanced up, drawing my eyes upwards as well to see two smaller, but at the same time, large dragons as they came down. I took in a breath, smelling one was another male and one was a female. The male was a deep purple color and he looked at me, taking in my scent and smiling at me. I growled, my fangs showing without a problem, where as the female looked at me for a moment before taking her green tail and swatting the male in the head. ”Enough you two younglings.” They looked at him quickly and then looked back towards us. The larger gray dragon snorted out smoke and then looked back at me. ”What is your name Hatchling and why are you here?”
I glanced to Tasia for a moment. ”I think he was talking to you, Sunglow.” I figured he was, but he was a huge dragon, bigger then I had ever seen and not someone I was sure I wanted to trust. I barely trusted the dragons back in Ilirea, only a few were good friends. I looked back at him for a moment, my golden eyes tracing over his large body, taking in the muscles… Sizing him up… I did not like the way he had spoken to us, how he had acted like I was nothing more then a rat. I could do things! Why did things have to get out of control? Everything was nearly perfect until now! Now, it was all going crazy and I was the dragon from the council that got into this mess. ”I am Sunglow and this is my rider, Tasia… We were sent her by the Rider’s council in order to check on the Queen of the elves so that we could help make her better. We had been told that she was acting crazy and we needed to help her. We also were going to a small village on the west of the forest where the Cathedral is spreading all of the sudden.” The two younger dragons looked at each other before looking back at us.
”You can not help the Queen of the Elves.” The female sounded much older then I had thought and I looked into the emerald eyes for a moment. I did not understand and the same misunderstanding came from Tasia. ”The magic that was used is a ancient magic, one that is rarely used in this day and time and most the time, uncontrollable… The Queen is lucky to be alive.” The young male chuckled after the female spoke, causing her to give him a nasty glare before he decided to speak. ”She is lucky we are here… For the Dragons… Not your kind Sunglow… We know how to fix it.” I growled, my white teeth showed and I snapped my jaws at him, showing my wish to just kill him at this moment. The arrogant mutt would soon learn that I did know a fair share of things. ”Enough Aedas!” His voice shook even the forest and Tasia trembled slightly, moving closer to my front leg. ”Though he is right, your kind can do nothing but weak little things, so move aside and let us take it from here.” I looked at him for a moment and then at Tasia. His eyes then went to my rider, Tasia as she looked up into his steel eyes, I could feel her fear.
”Elf… I wish for you to go and get the Queen of these Elves and bring her to me.” She just nodded and turned, running into the large tree. She moved with quick, bare feet. She was fast, her black hair moved behind her and I just looked up at the large gray dragon before he looked back at me. He snorted slightly and looked me over. ”You might of made a good dragon, it is too bad you were picked to be in that worthless pact made by Eragon and Bid’Duam…” I snarled slightly. I was a good dragon. His head snapped to the sound of a shooting woman, being hauled out into the road by Tasia and a few others with her. As the queen saw the dragon, she seemed to know even notice and I could tell it was because she was crazy. My eyes caught the sight of a young elf, possible the son of the Queen and beside him was a beautiful young elf… A couple? I snorted slightly and then looked back at the Queen and the dragons.
The large dragon shook his head at the Queen before he looked at his two comrades. ”It is what we feared…” I narrowed my eyes, watching as he lowered his head, the dazed Queen just looking into space. He took in a deep breath, his steel eyes holding her own eyes before he let the breathe release from his lips, causing a white like smoke leave his lips and hit her face. He allowed it to happen for moments, but it was only enough for her to breathe in. She looked at him for a moment and then started to fall, but his snout, large and much bigger then the Queen caught her before she hit the ground. ”Take her to her chambers, let her rest and sleep. Do not allow her to move or speak for three days. She will be better within those days and she will be normal again.” I watched as her guards ran out, grabbing her. Tasia was amazed, as was I. We had seen something not many other see and we knew that the Council would want to hear of everything. He then looked back to us, his steel eyes narrowed at us for a moment. ”Return to your council… We will relay message of this cathedral to the council in a few days… Tell them the Queen is well once again…”
”What happened?” Almalexia voice was sharp, causing my ears to ring as I stook in the large arena like place. Beside her was Elisedd, Kaveh, and Ivory, all elder dragons. They had heard the story once and yet they were asking for it again? Almalexia was amazed by the fact they had even helped. ”I told you everything Master Almalexia… They came and healed the Queen and they said in a few days they would tell use more of the Cathedal.” Tasia’s mind had been probed by Anurin so he could see everything and it had killed me. She had told me it had been a pain, and I had felt the pain, she had a head ache for days. ”What else?” I looked at her for a moment. ”They did not smell completely foreign… I think they are living in Du Weldenvarden…” They looked at me like I was crazy, but then looked among each other. ”We have not seen them in a long time, the fact that they are closer then we last thought, it is something we will have to learn about. She said, looking at the others for a moment.
”Sunglow.” I looked at Elisedd for a moment. ”Though the dragons said they would check out the cathedral, I want you to go alone, without Tasia and check it out yourself. You know how to become human and stay hidden.” I was surprised I was getting this mission alone, but I was getting it. Almalexia nodded slightly, glancing towards the door of the arena where there riders were with my own, speaking possible about what had happened. ”I have a question.” They looked at me for a moment. ”Why do they seem to hate us?” I was young, but I wanted to know.
