Name: Kamon Cosal
Age: 576
Race: Elven Rider
Dragon: Rashn
Occupation: Elder Rider
Allegiance: Order of Riders
Physical Description:
Kamon is well proportioned for an elf. She is of normal height for a female, if leaning slightly towards shorter and leaner. She has always been a fighter and definitely has the build for it. Kamon knows she may never be the strongest, but she moves with the speed of lightning. Her reflexes have been honed over centuries of practice and she takes pride in her marksmanship and skill using two smaller blades in tandem. As a fighter she prefers to keep her hair short. Kamon tries to keep her appearance femine, but it is not practical for her to have long hair, so she keeps her jet black hair spiked and short. Though any style she tries to add to it is often ruined by a helm of some kind.
It is rare that she is found without her twin blades, a special gift from Rhunon. The two are a perfect match for each other and her hands. The blades take the coloring of Rashn, though one of them is colored as fresh blood, the other as dried blood. Both shades are intermixed on Rashn, and Rhunon thought it a simple matter to have the twin blades to have slightly different shades. Rubies are set in the pommel as is customary and the hilt of one has the design of fire spread along with it, while the other as the appearance of thorns. They are Kamon’s prized possession and she holds them dear.
For attire she normally dresses in dark reds and black. Armor is customary and she keeps it well polished. Normally she likes to keep a bow near as well though it is not as necessary since she is somewhat gifted with magic. Her eyes are a deep brown, almost appearing maroon or red in color. It is eerie how she matches her dragon at times. Kamon’s skin is lightly tanned, though she burns easily due to her heritage. She keeps a single ring from her house, simply in remembrance of better times lost and hopefully the chance to redeem what she sees as fallen. The signet ring simply has the appearance of briar thorns on fire, though why this was chosen she doesn’t know. She keeps it close all the same.
Personality:
Kamon does not get along well with others. She does her best but if anything she can be seen as two faced and sly. This is simply because it was all she knew for most her life. Lynkael taught her to wear a mask and keep the secret of her true mission hidden. Despite giving up revenge for her house Kamon is unable to put aside the mask she has worked on for so long. There are very few she is able to be herself around. She’s happy that way, doesn’t feel too bad about it, but it can be off putting to other riders. Kamon can smile, be polite, laugh and do everything else socially acceptable, but what’s going on in her head can be completely different.
She considers Anurin a friend, and does her best to be herself around him, but it can be difficult for her. The only elf she truly felt free around was Eragon, and after his death she has drawn into herself somewhat, taken a relapse if you will. Besides her failing with being truthful among others she is much the same as her dragon. She is incredibly determined; her gut is filled with fire as Rashn would say. When she sets her mind on something she gets it done, and she gets it done her way. Not always the correct or ethical way, but she does her best with what she was taught as a young elf. When the riders want something done no matter the cost, look no further than Kamon and of course Rashn.
Violence has little effect on her and she truly feels free in the midst of battle, so she goes out of her way to find it. Blades spinning, blood pumping, Rashn’s fire overhead…there is where she feels like Kamon. Enemies have been known to flee from her grin and quickly surrender when they see the glint of red in her deep brown eyes. These qualities would make it seem that she would be a horrible teacher, and in a way she is quite bad at teaching, but she is quite good at getting results. Troublesome students are sent her way; Kamon doesn’t mind giving a bit more than a bruising while sparring. The rider has been known to keep hammering away at students that have already suffered a broken rib or punctured lung. She never lets them die, but she will let them suffer to drive home a point.
The rider also has some pent up bitterness and rage against both elves and dragons for the destruction of her house, but she has tempered that into something new because of her situation. Kamon has a better understanding of things now, and more often than not feels sadness for house Cosal than anger at its fall. Though she has lived for a long time she still has many conflicts to work through. Overall, she is a brutal teacher, a violent warrior, and a rash rider much like her dragon. However, she does have her own taste of wisdom and has been considered for a council position. The best steel is forged within the hottest flames, Kamon simply sees her forging as incomplete at this age.
History:
Birth-80
Kamon Cosal is one of the few elves that still carry her last name. Her father was considered very old to have child when she was born, and her grandfather had grown so old that he was almost ready to pass on. However, both father and grandfather were filled with bitterness and hatred for dragonkind. There is a history of bloodshed between House Cosal and dragons, starting with ties to the hunter to first bring down one of the beasts. They were at the forefront of the war against dragonkin, Kamon grandfather himself fought against the creatures, and was the sole survivor of the Cosal name. Young Hanlon Cosal spent centuries in bitterness, always despising and loathing the new treaty between dragon and elf. He had lost his entire proud family to their fire and talons and did not think they had been properly honored.
No, they were branded murderers by dragons and looked down upon by riders when they asked for justice. House Cosal tried to fight when other elves were beginning to believe in peace with dragons, and Hanlon saw his father, brothers, sisters, and cousins slain not only by dragons, but also by elves. Pent up rage and a feeling of helplessness have kept him in solitude on the edges of Du Weldenvarden. To the surprise of many he fathered a single child, though his mate soon left because she could not stand his belligerence. She went so far to get away from him that she tearfully left the son she shared with him. Hanlon would not let go of the boy, would not see the name of Cosal die out with him. One day he knew he would have his vengeance, if only in a small way, and he raised the boy far from other elves, much to the disdain and fury of many.
That was the childhood of Kamon’s father, Lynkael. However, Lynkael’s mother did manage to see her son at times, and the young elf would travel the length of Du Weldenvarden to see his mother and spend time among other elves to learn from them. Sadly Hanlon succeeded and Lynkael inherited his father’s bitterness and rage. The young elf felt sleighted and betrayed by his own kind. Hanlon’s stories told of a high house, far above many other elves, rich and powerful. A family that was incredibly close to the crown at one time. The fall of house Cosal was like a pit in young Lynkael’s stomach. It festered and grew, but he buried it and blended in with his kin, while still caring for his father. Secretly he would work against the riders, and pass along information to any that might harm the dragons and their bonded.
He met with some success and his actions directly led to the death of at least rider and dragon. That was not enough however, and his plots went further. Eventually he realized that he must also rebuild his house, and that would start with a mate and child. With his sly tongue and charming words he was able to find an elf his age to fall madly in love with him. She stays by his side to this day, blind to his ambition and hatred. Together they brought forth Kamon. Instead of the glee and happiness known to many young elves Kamon grew into a secretive life, and yet one surprisingly social. Her father taught her everything Hanlon had passed on to him, and she drank every word of it. Took in the bitterness and rage of a betrayed family. A hatred lasting centuries between only a father and son, and now a daughter. She would see House Cosal revived and brought to former glory.
At an early age she trained daily, with both magic and sword, waking early to take the steps of the Rimgar. Lynkael had plans, and she must be strong enough to face down a rider while possible dodging a dragon. So her days were filled with exercises and learning, subterfuge and sly words came easily. Kamon showed promise and she learned quickly, her skills with a blade and bow quickly advancing. The rage and hatred drove her on, and she loved making her father proud of her. However, things became much worse for House Cosal as Kamon finally reached adulthood.
She was about to turn seventy years of age, and Lynkael was about to succeed in his greatest of plots against the riders. To his dismay they were found out and shamed before elves. Hanlon passed on in weariness, his soul finally giving up, and Lynkael was jailed for an undetermined amount of time for his crimes against elves and the Order of Riders. He remains jailed to this day, but the elves thought of a different punishment for his ‘poor indoctrinated daughter’. She was sent to Ilirea where she would be kept as a ward, tending eggs, dragons and riders. Perhaps even to become a rider. Kamon pleaded to be sent to jail with her father or be given some type of duel to fight for her own justice, but no one would listen, and she was sent to her own personal hell.
70-80
Kamon was in a rage for the first month of her stay, and was constantly guarded by a rider lest she storm into the egg room to smash all the hatchlings. Anything resembling a weapon was kept far from her grasp. Many riders complained about her furious outbursts and had spells cast over her room to silence the noise. The young elf would bloody her fists on the door of her room, and at one time needed to be restrained for a week lest she hurt herself.
Eventually she adapted and learned control. She remembered the lessons of Lynkael and soon came to realize that she was in the perfect position to exact harm on the dragon riders for the fall of her house. Slowly she worked to gain trust and seem at ease among riders and dragons. Kamon began to show enthusiasm towards becoming a rider, was able to convince many that she was finally glad to be free from her father and happy for the chance to work with riders. It took a good amount of time, and she had to work with extreme patience
Finally she was allowed to actually be a guardian of the Sacred Font. After all, she would not have contact with the eggs, would never be in the room, and her skills with a blade and bow were extraordinary for such a young elf. They could use her as a warden there, and they began to trust her. Riders would turn their backs to her, and miss the knuckles going white. It took patience, but after ten years she was allowed into the sacred font, and she had a chance to destroy the eggs.
As fate would have it a prospective rider arrived just as she was about to begin her reign of destruction. He caught her clutching a blood red egg in hand, whispering strange words and puzzling out how to destroy it. Kamon was able to recover in time, and quickly explained it away to the excited young elf. She was able to make him believe she was inspecting it for damage; she was merely there to make sure he was alright in his first visit. The elf was intolerable, and incredibly talkative, and she had to escort him from the room. Kamon did not get another chance in the room for weeks…and that was all it took.
She was summoned, blood in the egg chamber, a mess of prospective riders were running in fear of Bid’aum’s mighty voice. How could she let this happen under her watch? She was already frustrated at having her planned spoiled earlier, and now she had to deal with this. Within minutes however, a different voice summoned her. Eragon was saying strange things; a dragon…had chosen her? The red egg could not have bonded with her! She had only wanted to destroy it while she held it! What manner of dragon had hatched from it? Kamon ran faster, ready to kill the dangerous hatchling on sight, there must be a problem.
Kamon burst into the room, ready to loosen her twin blades, and was met with a red blur flying at her. She ducked, spun and caught hold of the hatchling’s tail. Quickly she pinned the creature, and grinned with satisfaction as she went for the kill. Then it lunged, its snout sailing for the palm of her hand, its tooth grazed her palm, it’s nose brushing her skin. Pain shot up through her arm like liquid fire. Needles stabbing through her vein walls, fire and ice within her skin and sinew. She tried to scream, threw the devilish red demon away and clutched her head. It was there, the dragon was there! In her mind! She could feel its hunger, feel it’s pain. Eyes wide she stared at the creature in shock, and could feel through its own gaze looking back at her own distraught face.
80 – 230
Needless to say Kamon’s life changed drastically in the span of a few moments. Fate has a way of being ironic, and it certainly left the child of House Cosal in quite the situation. For the first weeks all she could think of was how thankful she was that her father was imprisoned. She struggled with her anger and bitterness, often leaving Rashn up to do whatever he wanted. The young hatchling took full leave of this, tormenting older dragons and killing numerous critters around Ilirea. When it came time to name him she simply called him Rashn, for both his bullheaded ways, and her own. At first it was a joke, but he stuck to it with his fool pride. They were forced to work together, and she had to deal with his awkward growth. His limbs, wings and neck never seemed to be on the same page. One or the other would always be larger or bigger until the next had another growth spurt. So though he had a good showing when first hatched he appeared clumsy and quite out of proportion as he grew. One week he would be used to how everything was set, the next day something else would grow larger setting everything off balance. This was incredibly frustrating for Kamon as she tried to work with him peacefully and come to terms with fate, but his clumsy ways tore her skin open to bone numerous times. The fact that he started breathing fire at an extremely early four months helped nothing as she was burned daily. Together they went through three different room changes after he burnt the others on mistake.
However, they bonded very slowly through their frustrations. Kamon, with trying to learn about Rashn and do her best not to hate him for the murders of her family, and Rashn tried to grow into his own scales. His body continued to outgrow him and they constantly fought. Still they had a grudging respect for each other, and soon enough over long years that respect turned into a steady trust. Rashn began to trust her and seek consolation for his growing problems, but it was difficult for the young elf because she was also trying to come to terms with being allied to a dragon.
Kamon’s relationship with Rashn was just as sporadic as his growth and their fights could be heard throughout their training. Some days they would get along and everything would feel right. On others he would try to kill her or she would plot to kill him. Both believed fervently believed in their causes and thought they had no need of their partner. Even after the other dragons of his age began soaring and breathing flame expertly Rashn was left floundering. His only help against them in the bouts he had was his size, though he was beaten for most of his fifty years of life. For some reason that wild blood was contending with the spell of the riders. His body wanted to grow just like the wild dragons, and it achieved that to a point, but the young dragon didn’t know how to deal with it. So Kamon and Rashn were delegated to simple tasks, ones that were deemed simple, ones no rider would ever really want to complete. Their training continued. With Rashn at her side Kamon studied and learned, watched and questioned. Despite her frustrating situation she knew her life had changed forever, House Cosal would now be ridiculed for centuries as their bitter hatred had turned to a reluctant partnership with the creature they so despised.
They achieved full rider status and Kamon was presented with a special treat after her long and arduous training, twin rider’s blade, made by non-other than Rhunon herself, and still Rashn grew. However, at about one hundred years of age his wings and limbs finally seemed to communicate, everything started to tie together, and gradually any sign of clumsiness faded away. During his next fifty years the riders began to rethink everything they knew of Kamon and Rashn. For one, the relationship between dragon and rider had become strong they had begun to trust one other, Kamon slowly leaving behind the teaching of her father. Now she realized that her house meant little in scale to the need of riders. Cosal had fallen when Lynkael had fought the order of the world, and she would have to leave her father imprisoned where, unfortunately, he belonged. Through the trials of Rashn’s growth and her hatred they had become closer and were finally learning to depend on each other. By her two hundred and thirtieth year Kamon still felt bitterness towards many dragons, but felt able to completely trust the one she would share the rest of her life with.
230-305
(here their histories meld more into one)
So began the slow transition from young inexperienced rider to the role of teacher, if not quite an elder. Rashn and Kamon never liked being tied down with new dragon riders, but the world simply was not so dangerous that it needed them fighting as they so loved. When rumors of lethrblaka were whispered Kamon and Rashn would take off before the council gave them leave, which would always come back to bite them when their punishment was training the new riders. The battle E62020 and will to win were still within the dragon and rider, and they were by no means elder riders. Many small troubles came and went by but Kamon focused her past hatred towards the urgals and lethrblaka that came her way. When she and Rashn could escape the overbearing older riders they would fly out as far east as possible and find battles to join in.
More than once they were in over their heads, and Rashn and Kamon have the scars to show for, bits that have been worked with magic but can never truly be taken away. One thing they did not mind doing for the elders, and that started during this time, was being ambassadors to the wild dragons. At first it was difficult for Kamon, given the history of her family, but she never spoke of the name Cosal and remained respectful if silent. Rashn however was on good terms with many of his even larger brethren as he could stand toe to toe with some of them. They knew his origins, even if he still kept the secret from Kamon; he knew that his father had strong ties to the demise of her own family. Though they did end up in more than a few fights with wilds, they at least came out alive at the end. More often than not Rashn’s pride would get in the way and some older mother dragon would have to put him in his place. Still they were much more successful than numerous other patrols and were able to get a few eggs for the riders.
At times Rashn would go to find the wild dragons simply to try and learn more from them and take part in some minor skirmishes to learn their techniques. Many times he was answered with fire for being a leashed dragon, but at other times his hubris served him well and he learned various tricks that became very useful. This way he brought strength to the riders by sharing his knowledge and learning and did his best to bridge the gap between the dragons bound to riders, and his free kin. Numerous adventuring and near deaths continued, and before Kamon or Rashn could believe it, they became known as an older and more experienced duo for Rashn had reached a half century in age.
305-436
((History is the same for both after this point; this is the same as what is posted for Rashn))
Rashn and Kamon became a trusted and well respected team. Though they did have their faults. For one, Rashn could be incredibly difficult to work with when it came to humans, elves and even other rider’s dragons. Kamon and he worked alone, had faced death alone and did not care for the help of others. After all, many took the red dragon’s name as a warning against his rash and unpredictable nature. Another was simply their pride, Eragon, Bid’Daum, and the other elders berated them on these accounts numerous times. They could have been more respected teachers, perhaps even vying for a council seat at their ages had they considered it. But Rashn and Kamon would not hear of it, they felt they could not live without the action and excitement of battle. Even after over half a century of sticking their necks out and facing stacked odds they continued to forge ahead. They were the go to pair for those tough battles and nearly everyone consulted Rashn on how to rend a lethrblaka into pieces, but at times they were still too rash and risky. Something that could get them killed if they remained overconfident. There were some humbling experiences, and despite their seeming recklessness Kamon and Rashn began to wisen up in their own ways.
Their friendship with Anurin and Almalexia grew; they were nearly the same age as the more respectable pair and had been known to get them into troubling situations. Kamon loved getting Anurin in trouble and Rashn could never give up the chance to fight Almalexia. They were unruly when ordered about by other older riders, but if either Eragon or Bid’Daum asked something of them they would see it done. Rashn and Kamon remembered the day of their bonding, and above all they respected the leader of the riders. Over the years they tempered slightly. Taught more and fought less, if only because the challenges were not as varied and fun as before. Everything they came up against they had already seen. For another thing, Rashn still grew faster than his brethren. Not to the size of a wild dragon his age, but not too far behind and a good deal further ahead than many his same age. None that had defeated him as a hatchling could stand up to him, though many were faster in the air.
Slowly Kamon and Rashn turned more to becoming ambassadors. Even if it left a bitter taste. So at three hundred and thirty-one years of age Rashn became the official ambassador to wild dragons even if he rebuked the Council seat. The pair’s wisdom began to show through their blood E62020 and they taught numerous students. The love of battle remained however, and they would occasionally take off on adventures none would dream of a pair their age doing. Simply because it should have been beneath them, the tasks were too simple and they could do more good teaching new riders. After a century of interceding between wilds and riders for official council business Rashn and Kamon began to dream of ‘retirement’, sure they hadn’t worked long for dragons, but they couldn’t stand the dull work when it compared to flying free. They knew they must work with the riders for life, and had much to learn from Eragon and Bid’Daum, but they wanted to fly further than any others, explore and seek out new lands. Anurin and Almalexia helped keep them in place, for they did consider the other pair dear friends. But those two were already way to interested in the council as far as Rashn was concerned.
They were forbidden from adventuring after disappearing for three years, and the Council was furious at them for abandoning them to deal with wild dragons on their own. Facing the disappointment from Eragon and Anurin Kamon and Rashn stepped down from the semi-council position when the dragon was five hundred and fourty years of age. They were made to be teachers once more, taking on students, but still they felt trapped. They felt they deserved a chance to be free of these duties for a while. And secretly began to plan with each other to leave Alagaesia once Rashn had reached half a millennia in age. Truly an astounding time to be alive considering all the risks they had taken. They were a hardened pair, used to the death of comrades and the squabbling of nations. Needless to say, they were not surprised by the actions of Palancar in Rashn’s four hundred and fifty-sixth year.
436-575
They decided to keep their opinions mainly to themselves. Rashn had always been proud and not too fond of the short-lived humans. Over the span of his life he had garnered some respect for elves, but not near as much for the shorter humans. All the same Kamon and Rashn would never speak against Eragon and would always follow him no matter what happened, though Anurin’s loud opinions began to wear a bit thin. They yearned to fight in the war, Kamon to help her brethren, for she still had family living, and Rashn would do anything to help his other half. For they had grown inseparable during their time together. They knew each other too well to be anything but the closest of friends. It tore Kamon apart seeing the elves die, but they would not move against Eragon, so they remained silent and did not voice their opinions.
They kept their mission as ambassadors to wild dragons going during the tumultuous time. After all, it was of concern to the wild dragons. They would want to know if their children would be bound with humans. The wild dragons were a part of the pact in their own way, so Rashn and Kamon had to help the situation stay calm there as well while Eragon worked on his pleadings with the elves. Rashn and Kamon kept their work trying to explain to wild dragons and gain their support for Eragon. Unfortunately while they were off visiting with wilds Eragon passed away. It was a shock for both Kamon and Rashn. Their mentors and friends had been aged, but elves could live forever correct? They mourned, and Rashn launched into a rage, nearly entering the war right then and there. Fortunately Kamon was able to make him fly to the Hadarac where there was vast open space for him to let out his frustration. Needless to say there is a large span of glass were once there was sand. A curious site in the desert.
They are still mourning for their loss, but eventually the war ended and they went back to living how they did before. Things were changing for sure, and they were preparing, but grief was still heavy, especially when they witnessed the hatred harbored towards riders and dragons. Then began the whispers, the rumors of blight off the coast of Teirm. A great monster of the deep, something risen for the ocean and come close to shore. A snake that could crush ships and generate waves to cause destruction on land. Some large and ancient beast that sank trading ships simply by surfacing near them. The riders were needed, if only to investigate these wild claims. They knew of sea snakes from the tales of the mighty Fundor, but something like this had never happened in their time. So in his four hundred and ninety-fifth year Rashn took off with Kamon, to see if the creature of Fundor’s legend was real.
The past year
The council believed sailors were doing as they always did, enhancing the truth and bringing forth an ancient evil. To be careful however they allowed Rashn and Kamon to attend to the matter. If they had known what they had faced Rashn himself would not have been sent alone, something that had not happened in decades. Kamon and Rashn were welcomed by the people of Teirm, and a ship was quickly sent out, though a crew was difficult to find. No one wanted to sail the waters actually hunting for the beast. However, Kamon believed, and rightfully so, that she needed to accompany Rashn and it would only endanger her and make whatever battle might happen more difficult if she was riding Rashn. She simply couldn’t hold her breath as long as he could, and she would be his weak spot, the one he tried to protect. They had fought battles at sea when they were younger, and they had made the mistake before.
They were not prepared for what they met. It didn’t take long for the creature to find them, and it nearly sank the ship before Rashn was able to draw it off and attack. Kamon supported him as much as she could with magic and the like, but after seeing the size of the beast…the best she could do was lend all her strength to her dragon and hope they survived. It was their hope that Rashn could entice the creature away, so they could make port and send for more riders, but it was not to be. Rashn’s pride would not let him back down, and soon it became apparent that the beast would not let any of them go. So the monstrous dragon fought with the great sea snake, and the ocean boiled and foamed for over two days as they strove against each other. In the end Rashn was able to win, but he was mortally wounded at the end, humility finally coming to him in his final moments.
He disgorged his Eldunarí in the hopes that he could remain there for Kamon, but she had not given up. Though she grasped his very being in her hands she fought to keep his body alive as well. Floating out on the ocean, with a crushed ship and dying hope she poured her entire being into healing Rashn, and at the edge of death herself he drew breath once more. Both were incredibly weakened however, and the ship had been destroyed, the crew dead or treading water nearby. Healing the dragon had taken hours, and Kamon had only strength for the mortal wound. Rashn still bled and was broken, merely able to float as Kamon stayed close to him, clutching the Eldunarí close.
They would have perished there if not for circumstance. Against all odds a human of magical talent had seen the great snake and he had made a Fairth of the encounter. He was able to show the dragon riders what he had seen, and they immediately sent out many more riders to warn Rashn and join him in the battle. It was one of those riders that discovered the bloodied dragon and his rider, spending what they believed to be their last moments together out at sea. Fortunately the rider was able to heal both of them, not to full health, for Rashn’s size was great and such magic would be immense, but it was enough. So with the scout, and soon the entire retinue Rashn was able to rise from the ocean and fly back to Teirm with Kamon.
Since the battle the tale has been kept quiet, the crew perished and only the riders truly knew what had happened. Kamon and Rashn asked the riders not to spread their tale, but to let them be. They gave their report to the Council, and were granted their wish. Among sailors the tale of Fundor coming back to life and flying out from the sea and destroying the evil that had assaulted them spread like wildfire, and Rashn’s new found humility was happy to embellish the story. They met a foe that would have destroyed them and they faced death together. At the moment they are weakened, still recovering from that great battle and have been oblivious to many of the happenings in the world. Rashn and Kamon spend their days together, as the dragon adjusts to having Kamon safe guarding his Eldunarí. They have been offered seats on the council, a new young council that could benefit from their experience, but they have not done much yet for they are still recovering. The times will not let them rest however, and they know that soon they must come back to the action.
