Name: Riley Fredrickson: Wolfsbane
Age: Twenty-three
Race: Human
Occupation: Thief, assassin, courier
Allegiance: Himself, Chaotic Neutral
Physical Description: Riley stands at six foot three inches, and weighs in at one hundred eighty pounds of pure muscle. He has dark brown hair, that he keeps cut short, and azure blue eyes. Women tend to describe him as handsome, but not outstanding. He tends to wear darker colors, typically blacks, though will wear lighter colors if the occasion calls for it. His clothes typically fit into the same general style, a hooded tunic, pants, and a pair of boots. The hood is rarely up, allowing him to have a full range of vision. He always wears a necklace made from a wolf's fang. It's impossible to predict what weapon he will wear any given day. One day he'll wear a longsword, the next a short sword, then no weapons. He will occasionally wear a dagger, but not very often. His belt is filled with pouches of varying sizes, he tends to carry a small first aid kit, lock picks, and smoke bombs most of the time. Many of the pouches are empty, allowing him to gain items when the need arises.
When Riley thinks there's a possibility of him going into combat, he wears light armor and both a longsword and short sword. At four points on his armor, he has holsters for throwing knives, each one holding five knives.
Personality: Riley isn't very interested in the current conflict, past the fact that he can use it to make money. He has no love for Elves, but doesn't hate them. So long as they leave him alone, he will return the favor. Riley knows when he's outmatched, and will avoid a fight when he knows that. He respects people's privacy when he's not working, but when he's on the job he could care less. Riley respects the Dragon Riders, and as such if one would ask him to leave a job behind, he probably would. Unless the payday was significant.
Riley expects one thing from all his employers, payment. If one were to refuse payment, or reduce it without Riley having broken part of the agreement, he will retrieve his payment. He does a job, he gets paid. He expects people to always do their best, and views laziness as a waste of potential. Socially, he is adept at remaining low profile, but he is not awkward when he does socialize. He doesn't have many friends, and the ones he does have he protects with a fierce loyalty.
History: Riley was born in Feinster, or more accurately, a small village outside of it, to simple parents. He had one brother who was older by a year, and after he was two years old, a sister was born. His father was a carpenter, and his mother a baker. His young life was spent playing with his friends when he didn't have chores. He was close with his brother, but closer with his sister. However, when he was thirteen years old he met his first Dragon Rider. This Rider assumed that Riley had the gift, and as such, with his parents reluctant permission, took him to learn how to use magic.
After several months of practice, and much trial and error, he was able to lift a stone with magic. Over the course of the next few months his days were filled with practice and physical exercise, and his nights with learning the Ancient Language. However, after a year of being with the Riders and elves, his skills with magic never came to the level the Riders thought it would. He could barely lift a stone twice before he was too tired to continue. However, there was still the fact that Riley was a mindbreaker, a human with little magical skills, but a powerful mind. He was kept for another year, the attempt to teach him magic remained, but didn't provide much success. He was taught how to use his mental abilities, but was not allowed to stay after his sixteenth birthday.
Riley's sixteenth birthday came and went, and he made no progress. He was forced to return to his family in Feinster, but didn't feel welcomed by any but his sister. Despite not being a magic user, he was still shunned by his friends, and most of his family. More out of jealousy from his brother, than actual fear. After a few weeks of working with his father, and almost loosing three fingers, he decided to leave. His parents gave him a pack and a small amount of money, his sister gave him a new set of clothes, and his brother gave him his dagger.
Riley's first decision after leaving was to travel to Belatona, where his uncle's family worked. However he didn't make it far from home, when he came across a team of mercenaries. They took jobs in all shapes and forms, thieving, killing, fighting, delivering packages, ext. Their current job however, was to attempt to rob anyone passing through this road. Two of the four rushed forward the moment Riley refused payment, they didn't have their minds shielded and fell to his powers. He commanded them to stay out of his way, which they did by standing on the side of the road. A third ran forward, only to be knocked unconscious by his two friends.
The final mercenary however was a half elf, and realized what Riley was. Offering him a possible spot on the team if he could impress their boss, who was located in the town of Furnost. Riley normally would have refused this offer, and went on his way. But the half elf was a powerful spellcaster, and shielded the minds of his team, leaving Riley with little choice but to go with them. Upon arrival, he met with their leader, and was offered a job after learning of his mental powers. He was informed that he would be killed if he refused, and so reluctantly agreed. Riley spent the next year training in combat skills, armed and unarmed, stealth, and theft. Mari, the half elf, continued his training with mental powers. Mari even continued his education in the ancient language, because the half elf only spoke in the ancient language. The two never became particularly close, they knew far too much about each other after their mental sparring.
After his year of training, Riley was a skilled combatant and a masterful mindbreaker, they decided to bring him along on his first job. They were tasked with carrying a package to Belatona. Riley viewed this as his change to get away from them, and stay with his uncle. They were told to report in an inn, and deliver the package to a man named Kay. The man however decided that he didn't want to pay them, and tried to have them killed. The five of them however, managed to defeat the soldiers who attacked them. Riley refused to kill the man who attacked him, instead using his mental powers to make the man fall unconscious. Mari however, killed the man and rebuked Riley. This was the first time he had seen someone die, and it disturbed the young man.
Riley completely forgot his desire to leave, and went back to the hideout in Furnost. While their, he came to terms with the death, rationalizing that the man wouldn't have done the same for them. A week later he was given his second job, despite the rebuke he received he did very well, and they left for Kuasta. This time their job was to help the town repel a group of bandits that was raiding the town. Unfortunately the bandits had something that none of them had encountered before. A wolf bigger than any they had ever seen. Despite the large wolf, the town and mercenaries managed to reel them once.
The second attack however proved almost too much, during this clash Riley took his first lives. He couldn't stop and think about it at that time however, and so he fought on. The young warrior saw the wolf fighting, slaughtering the villagers. He rushed to it, using his mind to keep villagers, soldiers, and bandits out of his way. Riley began fighting the wolf, which consisted more of staying out of the way and inflicting minor wounds than anything. Using a combination of inflicting minor wounds, and his mental powers, he managed to wear down the wolf. The two continued to fight until Riley tripped during the fight. On his back and exhausted, the wolf moved in for the kill stroke. Using his mind, and the best reflexes he could, he struck out at the wolf. His mental strike managed to surprise the animal long enough for him to raise his sword. The wolf impaled himself on Riley's sword.
The demoralized bandits were able to be pushed back, and the village retreated again. They drug the wolf back into the village as well, and skinned it. Riley kept several fangs from the wolf, and turned one into a necklace. The villagers began calling Riley wolfsbane for the slaying of the wolf. The next day they saw that the bandits were retreating, and the day after that they were gone. They stayed for one week, when they never returned, the mercenaries returned to Furnost. It took Riley another week to come to terms with the lives he had been forced to take, and decided to stay with the group.
The group stayed together for the next five years, until Riley was twenty-two. They had taken hundreds of jobs, trusted each other, and their skills became better and deadlier with every job. But as all things must, this came to an end.
They were working a job in Teirm, guarding a merchant while he was working on a deal. The merchant had been in dealings with pirates, and ended up cheating them. The small group were attack by the pirates, and while they were able to fight off the soldiers, they were useless against the ship's cannons. Riley and Mari were the only survivors. Their client was dead, the job failed and their boss disliked failure. So the two decided that they would never return to him. Instead they went their separate ways. Riley made a name for himself on the underground as a jack of all trades, courier, fighter, thief, anything that needed doing. He's remained as such to this day, managing an uneasy truce with his former employer.
Roleplaying Sample: Riley's mind was open, he could feel the thoughts of everyone around him. He disliked invading privacy like this, but he was working and liked to be aware of people's intentions. It unnerved him when he was working to not know what people were up to, it unnerved him when he wasn't working, but he had respect for people's privacy. It wasn't like everyone could do this. His job today was simple, keep everyone away from this meeting. It was simple work, a nudge in the wrong direction here and their. Though he didn't think he could keep a powerful entity away, such as a Dragon Rider, or a Shade. The average person however wouldn't be able to come near his location.
Riley sighed this was a boring job, but the money was great. Besides, his contact had told him that more money like this could be found if this job went well. And it was easy, a simple nudge to anyone who came close, and they had the sudden urge to go elsewhere. That was until, of course, he came across a shielded mind. Something always happened in these jobs to cause things to go south. And he didn't like it. Not with this much money on the line, and if he failed this job, he lost more than half of it. Plus the chances of similar jobs in the future.
Well, not boring anymore. Riley bombarded the shielded mind with his own mind, trying to find a weak point. Unable to find one, he tried attacking from every direction, and failed again. However his attacks didn't go unnoticed. The mind attacked back, but this provided the opportunity the chance Riley needed. He launched his mind right back at the other consciousness, and forcibly took control. It wasn't easy, and he almost lost himself, but he managed it. He quickly sorted through the person's recent memories, he was an assassin here to kill his employer.
Maybe a scene was just what Rile needed, so he forced the assassin to draw his dagger, and stab himself in the heart. The mercenary stood and entered the building he had been sitting in front of, the meeting was over. ”Go out the back. I'll explain later, just leave.” Riley might not get his full payment, but the job was a success. That was all that mattered to him.
