Very few traditions of Old Broddring remain, but the Hive is likely the oldest and the strongest, now rivalling the country’s government in power. The most feared organization in Alagaësia, this matriarchal criminal organization has its fingers in everything that goes on in Broddring and beyond- Alagaësia’s Hive is but one branch on the continent- and they plan out a lot of them. Nothing happens in Alagaësia without the Hive’s knowledge and full consent, and no one crosses them and lives. Bent on wealth as a goal with political power being a close second, the Hive is full of thugs as well as aided by hundreds of associates. Not even the Riders have done more than been a thorn in their side. It is occupied by both elves and humans, noble-born and commoners, as the Hive is welcoming to any oppressed female.
The Hive was formed hundreds of years ago by Atariah Hietala, a woman who was intelligent but used and abused as a prostitute due to her gender. After a lifetime of suffering at male hands, she founded the Hive- and, perhaps, the only good thing the Hive ever did was force women into equality. Today, they may become soldiers, artisans, and labourers at their leisure. However, the Hive continues to be the modern amazons of the world- men may be common Drones and Lieutenants, but they may never be senior ranking, and may absolutely never lead the organization. Even becoming a Lieutenant is a difficult and impressive feat for a man, as nearly all women who join the Hive, especially those who are senior ranking, were oppressed at some point in their lives and regard the opposite sex with disregard.
The Hive works much like an insect nest, true to its name- it is ruled over by a single solitary Queen. She is aided by her second-in-command, the Regent, who does most of her mundane tasks and will one day take her place, and three Shrikes, the advisors, from which the Regent is chosen. Once a Regent is raised, a well-to-do female Lieutenant takes the empty Shrike position. These four women make up the top ranks of the Hive. Below them are the Lieutenants, the crime bosses and highest rank to which a man may be raised to. Below them are the Drones, the rank and file of the Hive, expendable thugs that rarely last long. Still below them are the Associates- not actual members in any sense of the word, but information sources for the Hive that are regarded as nothing more than tools, whether they be lowly beggar or wealthy prince.
Today, the Grand Game of the elves has proven quite valuable to the Hive, and they have ensnared the nation and its queen. However, unbeknownst to most, it is a mutual friendship- Queen Dellanir gets to sleep easy, and those lucky connected elves gain the upper hand in the Grand Game. However, it is not known what the benefits to the Hive are from this strained friendship with the elves.
