I had promised my family, which was only my grandparents now, that I would go to Kirtan. I don't know why I had agreed on this, coming to this desolate city of nothing! The elves were lucky to even keep the urgals from breaking into our mighty forest, those rats would do nothing but sit in their city, which left us to come here. I might have only be one hundred and twenty five years old, but I knew enough. I had traveled for a few days, in my normal brown pants, boots, and brown tunic. Very normal for taste, common looking and boring.

Senka would kill me... Oh wait! Her annoyance already killed me! Her taste for fashion and always wanting me to be all dressed up. I rolled my eyes at the thought and walked towards the city, the look was already bad... The buildings on the outside, they looked bad, not livable and collapsing. Was there really a point in being here? Unfortunately, there was a reason and it was to keep those nasty urgals out. As I got closer, I was greeted by other elves, exchanging the normal and I continued going in, looking around. At least the inner part of the city looked okay, but not by much. I just tried to ignore it and continued to look around, hoping to find someone of interest.

Lieutenant Eilia Rylinnell stood in her favorite spot in Kirtan. She was atop the many stairs of the city's main building, the Iron Citadel. Having just been cleaned, the building was a little brighter than normal, although by the end of the day, it would be its usual dull gray. The sun shone on her raven-colored hair, brushed silky smooth, warming her to the tips of her toes. Her black leather armor was also pleasantly warm, even though the air was brisk. The weight of her chakram at her side and her sword on her back were comforting, as was the relative quiet in the city. It was never silent, what with all the forges and citizens crafting the soldiers' weapons and the constant drilling. However, a break between watchmans' yells was refreshing, and the front had been quiet so far.

The tall elf woman basked in the sunlight with an almost feline air, content in the knowledge that her city was functioning well. Quite suddenly, however, she detected something amiss. The sounds coming from one of the city's entrances were interrupted with an almost rippling effect. Eilia knew that only happened with the arrival of a newcomer. Most of the time, no one came to Kirtan. Why should they? It was a desolate, derelict city with most of the life beaten out of it. Whatever remained was the result of the deaths of many elves, and no resident of the city ever forgot that. So, naturally, when a fresh face appeared, people noticed.

As the ripple of disturbance broke into the main square of the city, the Lieutenant observed from her place on the steps a young elf man, dressed in drab browns and looking travel-weary. Deciding that she would be better served by letting the man come to her, she remained where she was, but called out to him to get his attention, dispensing with the traditional formalities. "Who're you?"

I was honestly still unsure why my grandparents wanted me to come here, they were still young in the sense of elves, but I had to remember to stop asking question. I was constantly getting hit in the back of the head each time I back talked or said anything about anything he disagreed with. I just rubbed the back of my neck and continued walking into the city, looking at the battle worn city, looking up at a few buildings so see some elves. Some were dressed in normal armor, others held that free spirit look. Me, I just was travel worn and figured I needed to find someone.

I was heading towards the town center, where the Citadel was and where I was sure someone who could give me a hand with information. Most the elven world knew of the Floros Family and most knew they all held a tattoo that showed proof of the family line. Maybe they would know why my grandparents sent me, but I doubted it. The two were crazy and they were from my mother’s side. They had come from Kirtan before it became nothing more then a battle wasted town and maybe that was why they wanted me here. They had moved in with my other grandparents in Osilon and they all agreed that I needed to go here for some reason. I might have been only one hundred and twenty five years old, but I was still completely confused as to the reason they had sent me here.

”Who're you?" I looked up in time to see a woman, probably the person in comman. I waved my hand to show I had acknowledged her and looked at the buildings. She was on top and I was not taking my time to go through the damn building if I could get up there without it the need. I took a breath and ran, jumping against the side of one and up it before jumping across the building and heading up to where she was. Once I was there, I fixed my pack and looked at her. "My name is Njord Floros and my grandparents... Sent me here."

[/color] I said, looking at her for a moment, my hair, though short and not elf like, was ruffled some from the travels.

Morwen traveled along the forest path until she reached the postern gate, the gate keeper called out to her as she replied and was allowed entry ’I wonder what would ever bring a person to such a God forsaken place such as this? At least this fortress has stood for a while, it should be safe enough here.’ Morwen wasn’t a soldier, but she could fight if needed to, defending another life was worth the risk.

Morwen staggered past the main defenses, mainly out of astonishment, ’This place has indeed stood against much attack, but at what cost?’ crumbled buildings, some signs of repair in spots throughout the outer ring of the city, and other spots where repair was obviously given up upon. ’How often is this place attacked? Well, I shall keep to my job, being a jongleur has its pros: main thing being that people are more open and trusting with the entertainers. One does get to learn more from these experiences.’ Morwen had been planning to go to Nädindel to visit an old friend, but there has been a recent plague of deaths among the guides to the hidden city. Morwen hoped that communication would not have ceased to the town, she didn’t want Jylee to worry too much. As soon as she settled down she would write a letter to her, Morwen got the feeling that she would be there for a while.

Down to business, Morwen needed to find a tavern, she asked a street vendor, ”Excuse me sir?” the man turned sharply and Morwen looked upon the mans face for the first time, his eye was glossed a white tint, Morwen couldn’t help but back up ”May I help you miss?” the man’s face was caring, and his voice was smooth. She regained her confidence and said ”Yes, could you point to place where I can perform my duties?” Morwen gestured to the case she favored upon her back. The man’s expression changed and said, ”It has been a while since we have had any entertainment, follow me.” Morwen obeyed and followed him to a tavern farther toward the Citadel. The man left her there to get adjusted; he had told her that this was where the military types would go after the day shift. Morwen was very eager to play here, by looking upon the faces of some of the soldiers and people as she walked in she was ready to entertain people, lighten the mood that had descended upon this town.

Morwen was told that she had a room ready for her, her meal was on the house, any drinks she wanted (which she wouldn’t ask for anything alcoholic) would be on the house, and she had a hot bath ready for her. Morwen had been traveling for so long she had forgotten what it felt like to have a private hot bath. Morwen looked forward to the bath more than anything, she took her Mandela out of its case and began tuning the strings, ’This is a pretty big town, hopefully word would spread around (hint hint) that an entertainer is in town and people will flock here so I can at least do my part to defend this town from the threat from within.’ Morwen began strumming to test the sound, the place had pretty good acoustics. Morwen set the instrument down at her table and laid her stuff beside her, Morwen unstrapped her quiver, set it down beside her, she laid her bow across the table and began unstringing it. Her act of displaying her weapons drew considerable attention, ’At least the guys know I am no one to be messed with.’ Morwen had but to wait for the guests on her first night in town to trickle in. Maybe even the Lieutenant would join the festivities. Whatever happened that night, Morwen was convinced that she was ready for it.

Eilia studied the boy as he stood before her. His nose was wrinkled against the stench. She almost felt bad, but knew that if he was here long enough, the boy would find a way around it. He was little more than a child. She was young, too, but her eyes had seen much more. She had seen the breath leave the bodies of her soldiers. She had seen the monsters invade the city, kill soldiers, kill civilians. She had seen her city destroyed. She saw the sightless eyes of her beloved every day, even though it had been years hence since his murder. No child fresh from the forest, fresh from Illirea, had seen things like that.

"My name is Njord Floros and my grandparents... Sent me here."

Although the lieutenant had no personal experience with the Floros family, she knew of their strange custom of tattooing their members, even those who married in. She had no trouble understanding why the boy had been sent here, even though he seemed lost and confused. She'd seen it many times. After coming home from Illirea, many young elves had a head full of ideas that did them no good. They often needed a shock back into reality from their world of flowers and butterflies, and Kirtan was the perfect place.

In Kirtan, there were no flowers. There were no butterflies. There were no trees, and there was no grass. The only animals were the warhorses maintained by the army. Some civilians had warhorses, too. The stench was partly dead bodies and partly the industrial centers, where the things that killed those dead bodies were made. More things were being made every day, so that more dead bodies could be made. Kirtan was a hard city, with hard people, hard steel, and hard stones. There were no tree-sung houses here. The houses were specifically designed to withstand attack. Humans and elves alike both said the war was over. They attend parties together, like the Gala held at the new year. But here in Kirtan, the war raged on without the assistance of Du Weldenvarden.

Here in Kirtan, elves either forged themselves in the heat of battle, or were consumed.

Eilia really hoped this boy wouldn't be consumed. She had seen enough dead boys.

"I know why they sent you here," said Rylinnell in a tone that nearly expressed defeat. She was dispensing with the formalities, as there was rarely time for that here. There was never much time between the call of the lookout and the beginning of the attack. "If you'll come with me, I'll get you recorded and then set up in barracks," she declared in her normal, ringingly authoritative voice. She stepped off towards the great double doors of the Citadel, expecting Floros to have the good sense to follow. One of the pikemen standing guard rapped for the doorman to begin the slow process of opening one of the iron monoliths.

I was not one to come to this city. Sure, I had held myself in the last war with those humans, I stood with my father, though he was killed, I saw his eyes lifeless before me once, but I had fought and I had survived. My sister was the one who probably had him rolling in his grave, begging to be silenced again and again for daring to see his daughter loving those rats with wings and those things that rode them. I turned my head slightly at the ground below, seeing someone else talking to someone and from the excited tones of the mumbles that I could hear, there was some reason with them being here. I tried to ignore it for the most part, but he did notice a few people heading into the Citadel.

I did not understand why anyone would be excited, especially here in this forsaken place. One of these day, it would do one of two things… Crumble and fall to the ground… Or… rise up again, but somehow… I doubted this would ever happen to this… City. I was young, but I knew enough about things, though I was still learning. I introduced myself to the woman before me, stating why I was here. She seemed to know me slightly, possible just my last name, which had been around so long that I could barely remember the full story half the time, but did it really matter? I guessed not. I was not completely lost as to why I was here, mostly… Confused why my grandparents wanted me here when I could do good somewhere else, like protecting out youth from the future with those hairless rats that so many, including my stupid sister, seemed to love. I hated that city that they were apart of. It would be good when it crumbled, but somehow, I seemed to doubt it would ever happy.

I looked around once again, considered throwing a ward up to keep the smell out of my presence, but I knew it would only drain my energy. I could see war horses walking around, which was different then in the other city, where the horses were delicate looking, and beautiful, but, they did have a bit of power to them. I noted the war machine that I would be using to kill those nasty humans that our kind seemed to respect for some odd reason. I noticed the lack of trees, which was good, because I got tired of feeling those soft trees in my mind, along with those good for nothing, soft elves that seemed to just take life as it was given to them. I liked the homes, maybe I could get a place with a bit of privacy, but some how, I figured I would be living with others, but at least it was away from my sister… That crazy twin who seemed to be connected no matter how many miles I put between us.

After a moment of waiting, I could hear some yelling in the streets of people calling out about something, but it was not a yell of battle coming, but some that held excitement, something that was not native to this city. ”I know why they sent you here," I was slightly surprised. Maybe they had sent a message ahead, to tell her of why I was here, but then again, maybe it was a lucky guess. I was happy to see she did not care for the formalities of normal elves, which I was bored of. ”If you'll come with me, I'll get you recorded and then set up in barracks," I nodded to her, following her to the double doors of the Citadel, knowing good a well that I needed to follow.

As we got in, there was a small table with a list of names and I figured mine would be the new one on the list. As we stood there, someone came in, laughing and talking faster then I could even understand. She looked at them slightly, wondering what was going on and then asking. ”Ah, we have a entertainer in town.” I rolled my eyes. Like this town needed a damned entertainer, it needed people ready to fight.

”Oh thankyou, it was really nothing, just be sure to spread the word of me being here.” Morwen closed the door to her room, specially placed was a tub filled with water, Morwen dipped her finger into the bath and noticed that it had ran cold. ”Hmm, now that won’t do, I came here to have a HOT bath, burni adurna” Morwen whispered as the water steamed, ”Now that’s more like it” Morwen undressed and got into the heated water, her muscles relaxed and she began to sing and recount the night she had. The night was pretty busy, not the busiest she had had, but still busy considering it was her fist time in town. The demeanor of the customers was very solemn, they were at first not as eager to down their ales and drinks. After the first couple of measures the mood quickly lightened, the inn keeper encouraged her to keep going as more people came in, when the night progressed one of her strings on the Mandela went flat, that needed adjustment fast; luckily for her she had built a reputation in the short time that she had been there that allowed her to do the proper adjustments.

Morwen had a distaste for the alcoholic drinks, so she kept to cider and water. The night went pretty well, she took a short break before midnight and played for a while longer. Most likely the people there would hardly recollect their experience, but the sober few would still spread the tale. Morwen relaxed in the tub until she had had enough, she got out and noticed fresh clothes on a rack that were waiting for her to wear, there was a note posted that said

’I have arranged for you to have new clothes, they are yours to keep as clearly the dusty dirty outfit is the only one you own, just place your old clothes on the rack and I will be by to pick them up in the morning.
-regards, the Inn-keepers wife.’

Morwen looked over at her cloak and clothes, ”They aren’t THAT dirty. Oh wellm have to appreciate the gesture.” She hung her clothes on the stool and slipped into the well-fit gown made for her, underneath it was a long-sleeved under-shirt with a vest and a long flowing skirt. The smell and the feel of the clean linen felt awkward, but soothing, Morwen quickly became adjusted to the feel of it and began to love it. ”What have I missed, no inn keeper or their wives have done this for me.” Morwen sighed to herself. She peered out the curtains to a view to the opposite side of the city, and beyond the forest. The easterly view would prove beautiful. Morwen sat back and read a book the she had stored away in her bag, began flipping through pages reading and becoming entrenched in the story.

Morwen set the book down and decided that it was about time to go to sleep. Her sword and other weapons were by her bead, Morwen loved the feel of a soft bed and pillow, the clean linen of the blankets felt great against her skin. Morwen sank into a deep sleep.

She awoke to a slight knocking at her door, she gracefully got up and opened the door ”Good morning miss, sorry to wake you but if you would like some breakfast is being served in the main dining hall. If you would like to join us we shall have whatever you would like our treat.” The woman was of a pleasant demeanor she was polite but she Morwen noticed that she was gesturing toward the clothes upon the rack, ”Would you like me to take those? I would be very willing to get them washed for you?” Morwen looked over at her normal clothes and said,”Oh, thank you, I hope it is not a bother to be taking care of me as such, I really have enjoyed your hospitality.” The woman looked surprised, she replied back ”Oh not at all! We are more than happy to house you, you are such a marvelous musician! I see that the clothes fit you well, please, stay as long as you like!” Morwen felt guilty, as soon as the problem would be resolved with the road to Nädindel she would most likely be out of here.

The rest of the day passed by smoothly, she went down to eat breakfast and explored the town, the citadel proved to be an amazing place, although the city was run-down it was still fun exploring it. Talking to people, some recognized her from the night before and greeted her introducing her to their families, friends, and other people on the street. Night approached fast and soon Morwen would have to be ready for another night of playing. Hopefully she would serve an even crowd, the last one tipped her well, but it was making people happy that was worth it along with the money.

Eilia was decidedly unhappy. Entertainers were few and far between, and their presence in Kirtan was always doubly and triply celebrated, due to their rarity. Already the word of this one's arrival was spreading. The army's commanding officer, however, really, really hated entertainers. Somehow, deaths seemed to increase when they were around. Instead of being at their posts, soldiers were joking around, making merry, and getting inebriated beyond the point of even marginal usefulness. And since Urgal attacks were quite regular, Eilia needed her soldiers to be as sharp as their steel.

Recording Floros' name and information in the official ledger, Rylinnell grumbled inwardly. The dark-haired elf did not look forward to the days ahead. She especially did not look forward to the graves she'd have to help dig. The lieutenant snapped back to her surroundings, finishing with the ledger. "Now, Floros, you're all signed up as a soldier in Kirtan's army. I suppose there should be some sort of welcome, so..." She was at a bit of a loss. What did one even say when signing another elf's death warrant? "So welcome to the front." That was about all she could think of to say, so she said it.

While the old soldier and the new soldier walked briskly down a hall of the Citadel, old soldier's boots thumping loudly against the stone floor, the old soldier briefly introduced herself. "I'm Lieutenant Eilia Rylinnell, and I run this city. The count might try to tell you otherwise, but he's lying." The old soldier took a rare moment to laugh to herself. That old fool count couldn't hold a candle to what she and her soldiers sacrificed for this city. "I've placed you in Barracks Ten. The resident officer there can assign you a bunk after we issue your weapons, uniform, and armor," she continued. "Then you're under the direct command of your barracks officer. You will follow orders, you will be punctual, and--" Here the lieutenant paused. She said these words to every new recruit, just as they had been said to her as a fresh soldier. "You will come to me with any concerns you may have. Understood?" Her tone brooked no argument; one could only answer yes.

That night, Eilia's hatred for entertainers was rekindled. She had been guilted into joining some soldiers in an inn where the traveler was performing. "It's good for morale," her most trusted officer had wheedled. "The uniforms need to see you, connect with you. They need to know their commander is with them."

"Don't they see enough of me when we're under attack? Of all people, Sjel, you ought to know how boring I am in social settings." The olive-skinned elf had been getting out of troop gatherings for years this way, but Sjel wasn't having any of it.

"Eilia, you know you need to go. Come on, please just this once?" She had given her blond officer the evil eye, one last ditch attempt to weasel her way out. He'd only returned her gaze ten times harsher, and she'd broken.

"Alright, but you owe me, and you owe me a lot." The dark-haired elf was quite aware of Sjel's feelings for her, although he'd never spoken them. Sjel had been close to Eilia when Kierlan was still alive, had been friends with the both of them. He knew better than anyone else just how close the couple were, and he knew that even though Kierlan had been gone for years now, he'd never have a chance with Eilia. In fact, Sjel was sure that no one would ever have a chance with his commander.

Now, Rylinnell sat stiffly, waiting for her obligation to end. The newest soldier, Njord Floros, was in the inn, near the corner, listening to the performer sing and play her instrument. Suddenly, the alarm horn sounded, clear and smooth above the noise of the crowded inn. Jumping to her feet ahead of the other soldiers, Eilia rushed out the door, drawing her sword as she went. The beating of Urgal war drums sounded in her ears, stirring the adrenaline in her veins and the beating in her heart. She joined the watchmen on the ramparts, knowing that her officers were mustering the other troops to their posts. Hopefully, there wouldn't be too many casualties due to this entertainer tonight.

I was not at all too charmed by entertainers, they were nothing more then a distraction and I did not feel like watching them, but the fact that she would be in the most popular places, I figured that I would have no other choice, but I would not be close to her, I would be near the door and eat quickly. I did not want to deal with people like those who entertain. They think life is nothing more then a game and it was really annoying. People died because of them, causing people to get relaxed when no one needed to relax at all. I was already in a mood to just get to work, so I was sure that a entertainer would do nothing more then delay that fact.

I could hear Rylinnell grumbling and looked at her for a moment... The Lieutenant did not look very happy and it was rather amusing to him. He was happy that someone else was not in the mood for playing around. It made him see that this town was not all about games. After a few moments of waiting, she finished writing. "Now, Floros, you're all signed up as a soldier in Kirtan's army. I suppose there should be some sort of welcome, so..." I just looked at her for a moment, surprised by this slightly. I had not expected a welcome, only a mission to fight for something my grandparents thought was right. "So welcome to the front." I looked at her for a moment and smiled. "I don't need a welcome, just my job. I am not here to play around with those worthless entertainers... I am here to kill some urgals or anything else that dare attack us."

[/color] I said to her. My mission was set and I did not want to under estimated.

We started to walk, the sound of people walking was a welcoming thing in the Citadel. I could tell the sounds of those who were in charge and those who were not. This woman walked with leadership in her steps. "I'm Lieutenant Eilia Rylinnell, and I run this city. The count might try to tell you otherwise, but he's lying." I smiled slightly at his words and could not help but chuckle. "Yes Ma'am."[/color] I said to her quickly, understanding what she said. "I've placed you in Barracks Ten. The resident officer there can assign you a bunk after we issue your weapons, uniform, and armor," I chuckled. "I brought my own weapons."[/color] I said, showing her my sword, the family seal on the Sheath, along with the pommel of the blade, the green emerald showed beautifully. I had two daggers that looked the same. "Then you're under the direct command of your barracks officer. You will follow orders, you will be punctual, and--" There was a pause and I looked her dead in the eyes. "You will come to me with any concerns you may have. Understood?" I nodded to her quickly and then looked at everyone else.

He left her shortly after, going into the barracks he had been placed in. The man knew quickly and started getting me set up with Uniform and Armour. It was quick and easy, since I knew my size was pretty common in most elven men. I put it all on to make sure it all fit and then the rest went into a trunk to hold any of my personal items, which was not much. The weapon I was given was a Bow, since I already had a sword and some common, weak arrows. I hated the fact that they were weak, so I figured I would have to send a letter to my sister. She was a master bowswoman, she knew how to make the best arrows and how to make them withstand the impact of the hardest rock... I could get them back, which was a good thing.

After I was settled I went to get dinner and sure enough, the damned entertainer was there and so was Rylinnell, the Lt. I was not sure why she was here, I could tell before she didn't like the idea. I sat in the corner, drinking some water and listening to the music. Soon, the Horn was going off and I was one of the first out. On my back was the bow and the weak arrows, but in my hand was the sword, which I kept in better shape them myself sometimes. I ran as fast as I could, seeing a few men going up on the wall. They need long range people to fire before they got too close. I would take my place with the archers until they got to close.
