Broddring was once an empire spanning three continents, the largest ever to exist. Naturally, it eventually fell, and it fell far. Wars, barbarian skirmishes, and infighting are but a few of the things that led to its downfall. It finally collapsed when the scattered provinces were set upon by a nameless terror that forced Palancar to assemble hundreds of thousands of his citizens and escape with them, leaving several million more helpless against the terror. He took them north to Alagaësia, where they sought refuge in the uninhabited open plains of the west.
And for a time, it seemed that Broddring had struck a proverbial bump in the road, and that it would slowly but surely reclaim its lost glory. Its people inhabited the abandoned cities of the west, and the Riders were welcoming. Palancar was a firm but gentle king, and his citizens saw sixty years of peace and quiet rebuilding. However, it was not to last- Palancar, who had suffered the strains of ruling and been deeply disturbed by the terror, began to grow frightened. And so began Palancar’s madness and the thirty long years of the Blue Divide, which brought about the true destruction of Broddring.
Any vestige of beauty remaining in Broddring has either crumbled or been made filthy by its citizens. Few know anything of their once great empire. Today, the nation is well-known for excelling in poverty, its decadent nobility sitting in their elegant towers high above the press of diseased peasants and slaves below. However, Broddring will survive- it has been battered by countless wars and pestilence and sent to rock bottom, making it as deadly as a wounded animal. And once one has hit bottom, the only place to go is up.
Recently, King Azuan, almost as terrible a tyrant as his father, died of a serious illness. Nayeli Richards, his eldest niece, took the throne, and she has made changes for the better of the country. Her geologists discovered nickel and iron in the Plains, and this has caused a huge explosion in the economy and created many jobs. She has forged alliances with other countries, and now many foreign ambassadors can be found within Hightower. Though Broddring still has a long way to go, it has definitely started clawing its way back into the light.
