Called Palancar’s Slaughter by the humans and the Cleansing of the Maleficent by the elves, the Blue Divide was so named by Ilirean scholars ironically- blue is the colour of purity and justice, and neither was present in the war. The ‘Divide’, which is not used with any irony, is attributed to the great rift that has appeared between the three powers of Alagaësia. Beginning forty years ago and lasting three decades, the Blue Divide consisted of King Palancar Angrenost of Broddring’s attempted invasion of Du Weldenvarden. Though the elves are racially superior to humans, they were slow to react, and even slower to adapt to Broddring’s advanced military technology. As a result, both sides suffered staggering losses. One in four humans and one in five elves lost their lives, including Palancar and the elven king, Vänskä Könungr.
Palancar was a quiet, but kind-hearted man in his youth, but this was quickly replaced by ambition and paranoia. His pleas to allow humans to become Riders were shoved aside by Queen Dellanir of the elves, and he began to fear and hate her. Thanks to Broddring’s impressive population and military might, he declared war. The elves, too, became embroiled in the fighting, but the Riders rarely participated due to their disinclination to pick sides and their anti-war policy. They would come to regret this, as both elves and humans would turn against them for their indifference. Cities were captured and recaptured, military technology revealed the creation of new long-range weapons such as the crossbow, and no end to the war was seen for some time.
Eventually, Eragon begged Dellanir to allow the humans to become Riders as well. However, embittered from her husband’s death on the battlefield, she refused. Eragon soon died due to his advanced age, but rumours persist that he was ‘helped along’. Eventually, Dellanir ordered a hit on Palancar that saw the king brutally slaughtered right underneath his generals’ noses. The Blue Divide came to a very sudden end as Broddring erupted in chaos. Rather than kill them while they were vulnerable, the elves retreated back to Du Weldenvarden, and now only emerge for diplomacy, both legal and extralegal. The next ten years saw both nations recuperating from the struggle.
Though a second war is likely to wipe one or even both kingdoms out, it lingers in the back of many minds. Diplomacy is rocky at best, and elves in Broddring and humans in Du Weldenvarden with no political reason to be there are chased down and imprisoned, and often executed. It is already rumoured that a second war has begun- a secret war of wits and blackmail, but just as bloody as any of the Blue Divide’s battlefields.
