Those who are born into every privilege inevitably desire more.
Even since the days of Alalea, the nobility has exercised total control over the kingdom. It is truly a rarity for any elf to not be in any sort of contact with the aristocracy. They either possess a title themselves, and the number of titles available is vast- or are in the service of nobility. The ones who are not are nearly always isolationists, elves who live in seclusion from the rest of their Du Weldenvarden kind, or the banished. However, titles in themselves are never enough for the constantly power-hungry elves, and so over the centuries, a murderous, seductive scheme was formed, known as the Grand Game.
The Game is how any elf, if they cannot win it by purchase, alliance, or deed, may obtain prestige by removing their rivals, often by assassination, false imprisonment, or wrongful exile. Everyone is a part of it, and no one person ever has full control over it. Nobody has the ability to oversee it, not even the sitting ruler. Most elves take matters into their own hands through seduction, blackmail, or even outside influence. The only way one can escape it is by leaving Du Weldenvarden- and once one leaves Du Weldenvarden, they are considered tainted by the foulness of the humans and forbidden to ever return.
For all their games and passions, the only nobles with true power both inside and outside Du Weldenvarden are the royal family and the Elder Council, and more recently, the army general. The Riders were once the elves' greatest allies, but they have been branded traitors by Queen-Mother Dellanir Dröttning and are not allowed in Du Weldenvarden on pain of death. Now, Du Weldenvarden has become obsessed with the study of new magic, and fear of another attack by the humans hangs like a shadow over the forest.
