Name: Xanatos Ulysses Jackson Lee
Age: 46 years
Race: Human
Occupation: General of the Royal Broddring Army, Fifteenth in the Line of Succession for the Crown.
Allegiance: King Angrenost and the Kingdom
Physical Description: Forty six years have left their toll on the once proud warrior. His gray eyes stare into the distance, looking beyond. His gray hair is starting to recede, meaning he keeps it combed over. His beard is kept carefully trimmed. Both are white. Vaguely portly, Xanatos exercises vigorously each day to keep it at bay, but so far he’s fighting a losing battle. Scars checker his arms, back, and torso, mementos from the battles he fought in during his rapid rise through the enlisted ranks to a battlefield commission. Soft features give him the appearance of a kindly grandfather figure. Xanatos is fairly short for a male, barely topping five feet seven inches.
Often dressed in gray coat, trousers, and riding boots, Xanatos’ only admission of his rank is the sword which comes with his post. Ornately decorated with jewels on the hilt, and a gold cross-piece, it’s more decorative than functional, but as a sword, it is able to be used for that which all swords are made for; dealing death. It is a curved cavalry sabre, and the sheath matches the hilt; gold, with jewels upon it. Traveller is Xanatos’ charger and gray.
Personality: Xanatos’ personality matches his figure. He always has a kindly word for his troops, and indeed, they view him as a grandfather figure, due to his concern for their well being and the fact that he doesn't send them needlessly to their deaths in slugfests.. They see his wisdom as invaluable, and worship him only behind the King, due to the veterans still under his command and their sons. He only gets angry in extreme situations, and sometimes not even then. A loving father, he despairs when sending his army into the meat grinder that is battle and war. Their deaths lay heavily upon his heart, and the only reason he continues as the General of the Royal Broddring Army is because the King asked him to serve in that capacity. A brilliant tactician, the current method of facing off in lines and slugging it out is devastating to populations. As such, Xanatos does his best to fight wars of maneuver, position, and stealth, not even slugfests, because he knows the humans cannot match the elves in prowess of anything. The only way the humans were able to achieve some semblance of equal footing during the Blue Divide was throwing massive numbers at the elves until they were routed. Xanatos knows this, and hates sending his men to their deaths, which is why he fights wars of maneuvers .
Agreeable to try anything once, Xanatos holds open forums with his troops to discuss matters of concern to them, such as rations, equipment, and even tactics before a battle. He quite enjoys pod (cribbage), especially when playing with three or more other players. Often, he draws the other players from his troops, explaining the rules to them when they don’t know them, and serving his best wine to the other players.
As General of the Army, politics play a large part in his day. Xanatos hates direct, brute force, and often prefers to ignore the nobles doing their best to ingratiate themselves with him when it serves them. He hates anything that has to do with politics. To him, service to King and country takes precedence before all. However, due to politics playing such an important role in his job, he cannot afford to ignore the nobility. As such, he drinks with the counts and countesses whose cities his troops are stationed in. The politics mainly consist of Xanatos deciding whether or not a minor town's lord's pleas for help with local Urgal attacks are worth the expense, time, and effort of sending professional soldiers to deal with. It usually ends with Xanatos sending a cadre to train a militia.
History: Born to a minor noble and officer in the Army and a woman of equal rank, Xanatos spent his first five years blissfully unaware of the Blue Divide. Due to his military upbringing, a strong love for King and Country were fostered in the heart of the young Carvalan. This came to a head at age ten. However, when at age ten, his father was killed leading an infantry charge upon a fortified position, Xanatos knew that the military would be his life. If his father deemed the Country and King good enough to be willing to risk his life for, Xanatos could do no less than his father before him. He spent the next six years learning to fight as a man lost in the desert after many days drinks water upon finding a well. Xanatos drank in the arts of war as long as he could find someone to teach him, and when no one would, he practiced what he knew. At sixteen he, ran away to join the Army and was faced with a choice: Join the infantry, cavalry, or engineers. He joined the cavalry, and was originally posted to help survey positions for artillery. His duty consisted of finding hills or other easily defensible positions for the artillery to be placed upon.
After four months and learning how to site artillery, Xanatos was transferred to normal cavalry duty. He received a battlefield commission at the Siege of Nadindel when his commanding officer was killed and he successfully led the remains of the shredded unit in a defense of a hill labeled vital by the high command. Xanatos began a rapid rise through the ranks from there, eventually commanding several battles upon the Silent Plains. In each and every case, Xanatos served with honor, courage, and distinction. Decorated for his actions, Xanatos managed to keep his command from being completely destroyed.
He fought through the Blue Divide, and was there at the end, when Palancar was killed. He helped Angrenost consolidate his power by providing soldiers with which to help defend the King and capital from any ambitious city count seeking to seize the capital and throne for himself. Among him in this were the soldiers of Carvala itself, the portion of the Army loyal to Xanatos and King, and the Savage Faithful. For his help in the chaos after the assassination, he was offered the position General of the Army. The shadow war that is denied yet is truly happening is merely one of the few issues that Xanatos has on his mind while he does his best to keep Angrenost on his throne and the country from anarchy. The professional corps of officers that served with him as a lower commander often help with this; loyal to him, they do their best to keep their troops loyal to themselves. Since they're loyal to Xanatos and Xanatos is completely dedicated to his King, he never has to think about a military coup being a possibility. The soldiers directly under Xanatos are younger officers and the men directly controlling the troops. (OOC: For an example, Robert E. Lee's system of organizing the Army of Northern Virginia into Corps, each Corps being commanded by a general officer directly under him.)
